Austriamicrosystems has introduced the AS1701/6 series of 1.6W single-channel audio amplifiers. Compared to similar products, the AS1701/6 audio power amplifier delivers higher output power (1.6W) at the same level of distortion; at the same output power, the series offers lower distortion. This makes it an ideal audio front end for MP3, CD and DVD players, cell phones, PDAs, portable speakers and other battery-powered handheld devices.
The AS1701/6 family uses bridge-tied load (BTL) outputs to differentially drive 4Ω and 8Ω speakers. The distortion of this series of amplifiers is extremely low. When the 1W output power enters the 8 Ω load, the distortion is only 0.05% THD+N. THD+N is only 1% when the 1.6W output power enters a 4 Ω load or 1.2W into an 8 Ω load. The new amplifiers have an input voltage range of 2.7 – 5.5V and are suitable for 3V system applications, providing continuous 600mW output power into a 4 Ω load. The AS1701/06 series has a low power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) and eliminates the need for a linear rectifier even in the presence of noise figures. Its integrated gain circuit can be adjusted with external components to provide maximum flexibility in system design.
The integrated shutdown circuitry eliminates the need for bias generators and amplifiers to reduce quiescent current losses to less than 10nA. Its shutdown input signal can be controlled by a digital signal. A complete click-pop suppression circuit reduces clicks and resonances when the power is turned on and off.
The amplifiers are available in an 8-lead MSOP package and are pin compatible with the National LM4890 and Maxim's MAX9716.
