Japan develops underwater visible light communication device with LED to achieve 50Mbps communication speed

    Japan's Taiyo Yuden and Toyo Electric jointly developed a device for high-speed wireless communication using visible light underwater. A universal blue LED with a low attenuation rate in water achieves a communication speed of up to 50 Mbit/s under water.

    Under water, since the attenuation rate of electromagnetic waves is very high, it is difficult to perform radio communication using radio waves. Therefore, although there is low-speed wireless communication using sound waves and visible light, there is no high-speed communication method capable of transmitting a large amount of data such as video.

    When Taiyo Electric and Toyo Electric verified the device, they cooperated with the Japan Broadcasting Association (NHK) to conduct underwater tests in the swimming pool. In the future, we will promote development for a variety of applications while achieving miniaturization and weight reduction.
