More than athletes preparing for the Rio Olympics: Microsoft Azure

In August of this year's Rio Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the United States NBC TV used Microsoft Azure Media Services to broadcast audiovisual content throughout the event.

Azure Media Services has been working for 3 years and has provided similar services for the Super Bowls and the 2014 NBC Sochi Winter Olympics broadcast.

However, this time there is a big difference. According to Sudheer Sirivara, general manager of Azure Media Services, Rio's time zone is only one hour behind the eastern part of the United States, so the demand for live broadcasts will be much greater than the previous Sochi Winter Olympics. And there are more games for the Summer Olympics, which is about three times that of the Winter Olympics. The Olympic Games will have a record of 4,500 hours of 1080p video broadcast. In comparison, the Sochi Winter Olympics is a 1,000-hour 720p TV broadcast.

It is reported that approximately 1 million people in the United States will watch live broadcasts provided by NBC at the same time. People also use more devices, including mobile phones, laptops, tablets, desktops, and televisions, as well as Roku and Amazon Fire Stick. Streaming sticks.

The mission of the Rio Olympic Games broadcast by Azure was particularly noticeable, because this time coincided with Microsoft's opportunity to expand its overseas cloud computing business to shorten its distance from rival Amazon. If Azure Games is completed well in this Olympic Games, it will undoubtedly help Microsoft's new market development.

The data will be transferred from Rio to the headquarters of Connecticut, where the NBC Sports Group is located. In order to avoid data redundancy, Microsoft's East Coast Virginia and West Coast California data centers will run simultaneously, and will have more than 20,000 cores and several PBs of storage in use. Although Sirivara did not specify how many people Microsoft will invest in this time, he stated that in order to deal with emergencies, every employee will be ready to go.
