The flexible battery printed on clothes or the future of wearable technology

One of the biggest challenges in wearable technology is overcoming the limitations of material and size. Despite advances in other areas, current battery technology still restricts the flexibility of design. However, a breakthrough has recently been made by researchers in the United States: they have developed a flexible textile battery that can power wearable devices while maintaining the softness and flexibility of regular cotton fabric.

Nazmul Karim, a researcher at the University of Manchester, was part of this groundbreaking project. He explained that this flexible textile battery marks the beginning of smart fabrics, bringing us closer to real-world wearable computers. The battery can power wearable devices, allowing displays to be embedded directly into clothing for improved health monitoring and comfort.

The flexible textile batteries are made from low-cost graphene materials and use simple screen printing technology. The electrodes are highly stable due to strong interactions between the ink and the fabric, ensuring safety, long life, and fast charging. Additionally, the material is water-resistant, making it suitable for everyday use and washing.

The research team hopes their innovation will pave the way for future smart wearables and intelligent clothing. They are currently finalizing their findings for publication. Meanwhile, the University of Manchester is investing £60 million in building a large-scale graphene production facility, set to open next year. This facility will support global research through the International Graphene Institute, further advancing the field of flexible electronics and smart textiles.
