Synaptics Announces World's First Downscreen Fingerprint Sensor fs9500

Since the start of this year, there were rumors that the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the Apple iPhone X would feature in-display fingerprint recognition technology. However, when both devices finally hit the market, they surprisingly lacked this feature. This omission became a major disappointment for many users who had been eagerly anticipating it. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8, despite its full-screen design, opted to place the fingerprint sensor on the back of the device, while the iPhone X completely abandoned Touch ID, leaving users without any physical fingerprint scanner at all. The absence of under-screen fingerprint technology was seen as a significant missed opportunity. Recently, Synaptics made a groundbreaking announcement: the world's first off-screen fingerprint sensor, the Clear ID FS9500, has been launched. This innovation is set to change the future of mobile security. The FS9500 is integrated directly into the AMOLED display module, using the same optical materials and manufacturing processes as standard OLED screens. Its ultra-thin design allows it to be less than 1.5mm thick. The sensor uses optical technology and supports advanced encryption methods such as TLS, AES, and ECC to ensure secure biometric authentication. Synaptics confirmed that the FS9500 has already been handed over to one of the top five smartphone manufacturers and is currently in mass production. It is expected to be showcased at CES 2018 later this year. One of the key benefits of the Clear ID FS9500 is that it eliminates the need for a circular home button or a separate fingerprint sensor. Users can now enjoy a true full-screen experience while still having secure and convenient biometric access. When activated, the FS9500 uses the backlight from the OLED panel above to illuminate the area of the finger, then captures the reflected light and sends it to the sensor underneath. This process is fast, accurate, and highly secure. According to Synaptics, the sensor is not only compact but also more durable than traditional external buttons, as it is protected from moisture, dirt, and wear. This makes it ideal for use in modern, sleek smartphones. In addition, the FS9500 is equipped with SentryPoint Security and Anti-Spoofing Suite technology, which ensures that only real fingerprints are recognized. It continuously adapts to improve accuracy and prevents fake fingerprints from being used to unlock the device. While the company hasn’t officially announced any specific designs yet, it mentioned that an in-house demonstration will be available at CES 2018, with the first smartphone featuring the technology expected to be released shortly after. So, what makes under-screen fingerprint recognition so challenging? From a technical perspective, there are four common types of fingerprint sensors: optical, capacitive, thermal, and ultrasonic. Most consumer electronics prefer capacitive sensors due to their compact size and cost-effectiveness. Capacitive sensors, usually located under the home button or on the back of the phone, capture detailed texture data from the finger surface and store it securely. A typical user needs to place their finger on the sensor 8–12 times to complete the registration process. Today’s capacitive sensors offer near-instantaneous unlocking, typically taking just 0.15–0.2 seconds. They are also quite secure, with many models incorporating in vivo detection to recognize real fingers based on temperature changes. However, capacitive sensors struggle to detect fingerprints through the screen itself due to the thickness of the display module, which limits signal quality. That’s why under-screen fingerprint recognition is mainly achieved through optical or ultrasonic technologies, which have stronger penetration capabilities.
