AI Becomes a New Battleground for Mobile Phone Chip Manufacturers, Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Huawei Seek New Breakthroughs

Over the past decade, mobile phones have witnessed a wave of remarkable innovations. From dual-core to octa-core processors, from small screens to full-screen displays, and from sliding unlock to fingerprint and facial recognition, the evolution has been rapid and transformative. To keep up with ever-growing consumer demands, smartphone brands and chip manufacturers have continuously sought new breakthroughs and features. According to a report by Digitimes, chip suppliers are now focusing heavily on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their next-generation solutions. Companies like Apple, Samsung, Huawei, MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Spreadtrum are all investing heavily in AI, seeing it as a key area for future growth. AI is no longer just a buzzword—it's becoming a central feature in smartphones, driving new capabilities and user experiences. In the early stages of AI development, different smartphone manufacturers approached its implementation in various ways. Some focused on voice assistants, others on camera enhancements, and some on improving overall device performance through AI-driven processing. One standout example is the iPhone X, which made AI a core selling point. Apple’s A11 Bionic chip includes a neural engine capable of performing up to 600 billion operations per second. This allows the phone to recognize faces, locations, and objects, powering features like Face ID and Animoji. Apple also plans to expand this AI technology across its ecosystem, including the Apple Watch, drones, and health-related applications. Huawei has also made significant strides in AI. The Mate 10 series featured the Kirin 970 chip, which included a dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit) for AI tasks. This allowed the phone to automatically adjust camera settings based on the scene, making photography more intuitive for users. It could also translate text, voice, and images in real-time, enhancing communication across languages. Samsung introduced Bixby on the Galaxy S8 and Note8, positioning it as a learning AI assistant. Unlike Apple’s Siri, which is primarily a voice control tool, Bixby offers a more advanced, interactive experience, representing a new way of human-computer interaction. Qualcomm and MediaTek are also pushing AI forward. In 2018, they aimed to integrate AI into various aspects of smartphone functionality, such as photo processing, biometrics, voice recognition, and mobile payments. Their new chips promised to deliver a more intelligent and seamless user experience. Despite these advancements, smartphone manufacturers plan to focus on improving features without raising prices. As a result, chipmakers like Qualcomm and MediaTek opted to use the 10nm or 16nm process in 2018 to balance performance and cost. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 was one of the first chips to fully leverage AI, supporting voice recognition and other smart features. They also partnered with Baidu to enhance voice technologies in smartphones and IoT devices. MediaTek’s P25 chip demonstrated strong AI capabilities in 2017, particularly in Samsung’s J7 Plus. The company plans to continue expanding AI applications, including voice recognition, biometrics, and mobile payments. Spreadtrum Communications, a domestic chip supplier, also announced plans to release an AI processor in 2018, using TSMC’s 12nm process—a step up from the existing 16nm. This move shows that AI is becoming a fundamental part of the smartphone industry, with companies worldwide racing to lead the next technological revolution.
