Hamamatsu laser chip to a new level

    In recent years, fiber lasers have become one of the most significant industrial laser technologies worldwide. Compared to other types such as semiconductor, solid-state, and CO2 lasers, fiber lasers now hold over 50% of the global market share. In 2016, the total revenue from industrial lasers reached $10.4 billion, with kilowatt-class fiber lasers used in metal cutting and soldering applications accounting for 41% of that total. This rapid growth has driven the advancement of pump-source semiconductor lasers, which are now evolving toward higher power and greater brightness. Hamamatsu has consistently been at the forefront of the laser industry. Before August 2015, the company completed a 20-hour long-term reliability test on its 20W chips, achieving a photoelectric efficiency of over 65% and an MTTF (Mean Time To Failure) of nearly 860,000 hours. In the second half of 2016, Hamamatsu introduced its 9XX semiconductor laser chip series. These chips feature a unique P-plane structure that reduces the risk of leakage, along with an innovative window design using a vacancy-free disordering structure. This design significantly improves both the conversion efficiency and overall reliability of the chips. With the fast-paced development of the semiconductor laser market, Hamamatsu is continuously upgrading its product line and expanding its production capacity. The newly built Miyakoda New Foundry, covering approximately 4,000 square meters, utilizes state-of-the-art manufacturing technology and advanced equipment. Expected to be completed by the end of 2017 and operational in early 2018, this facility will greatly enhance both the capacity and performance of Hamamatsu’s products. Hamamatsu continues to push forward in the areas of high power, long life, strong stability, and product diversification. Today, the company offers not only semiconductor laser chips but also laser modules, light sources, quantum cascade lasers, ultra-short pulse lasers, and microchip lasers. These products find applications in various fields such as measurement, heat treatment, gas analysis, and integrated optics, including distance measurement, plastic welding, brazing, automotive exhaust gas detection, and MOEMS.
