A deeper look at Lenovo’s past reveals that it was founded in a different era, one where state-owned enterprises dominated. This historical context shaped its early structure and decision-making. Unlike private entrepreneurs such as Ren Zhengfei, Lenovo’s origins were more institutional, which influenced its development path. Despite this, key figures like Ni Guangnan and Yang Yuanqing played crucial roles in shaping the company’s legacy. Yang Yuanqing, in particular, faced immense pressure during critical moments in Lenovo’s history. He took over during a major crisis and managed to stabilize the company, despite not being Liu Chuanzhi’s preferred successor. His career has been defined by navigating complex internal politics and external challenges. While he may not have the same ownership stake as traditional founders, his role as a professional manager has been essential to Lenovo’s survival. Today, the challenge for Lenovo is to move beyond its PC-centric model. While the global PC market is shrinking, there are still opportunities in emerging markets and new technologies. Yang Yuanqing’s ability to lead the company through this transformation will determine its future success. In conclusion, although Lenovo’s current position is not ideal, Yang Yuanqing remains one of the most capable non-founder CEOs in China’s tech industry. The road ahead is difficult, but with vision and strong leadership, Lenovo can still find its place in the evolving digital landscape.
