Japanese research and development attached to the body of the LED display is 1 mm thick and retractable

According to recent reports from Japanese media, a research team led by Professor Yoshihiro Tani from the University of Tokyo has made a groundbreaking advancement in flexible display technology. The team successfully developed a thin LED display that can be directly attached to the human body, with potential applications in both the fashion and medical industries. In their experiments, the researchers also created a film that works in conjunction with sensors on the body to visually display an ECG (electrocardiogram) waveform. According to Dye, a member of the team, this technology could one day serve as an alternative to smartphones and tablets for displaying information, offering a more personalized and wearable solution. The display itself is only 1 millimeter thick, and due to its stretchable design, it can expand to a size ranging from 3.8 to 6.4 centimeters in length and 5.8 to 9.6 centimeters in width—roughly the size of a business card. This flexibility makes it ideal for integration into clothing or medical devices without compromising comfort or usability. The key component of the display is a rubber-like film embedded with 384 tiny red LEDs. Thanks to a special pleating process, the LEDs remain intact even after being stretched and compressed over 10,000 times. This durability ensures that the display can function reliably under repeated use, making it suitable for long-term wear. The device is also equipped with a built-in battery, and Dainippon Printing Company, which is collaborating on the project, aims to further reduce its size in the future. The company hopes to bring the product to market within three years, with an estimated price of tens of thousands of yen. This development marks a significant step forward in the field of wearable electronics, opening up new possibilities for how we interact with digital information in everyday life.
