On March 8th, UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a product safety testing and certification agency, announced the acquisition of Luminaire Testing Laboratory, Inc. (LTL), an independent organization that provides photometric test reports for the lighting industry.
LTL, based in Ardenton, Pa., is one of five laboratories accredited by the US Department of Energy (DOE) for testing ENERGY STAR LED lighting products. This acquisition will allow UL to strengthen its global leadership in the strategic market for lighting product safety testing.
LTL has 20 years of experience in energy efficiency testing of lighting products. In addition to providing energy efficiency testing, LTL also provides a number of performance testing services for luminaires and lighting equipment. LTL is also an advanced organization that actively promotes the development of photometric test standards. The standards that have been assisted include the IES-LM79, the main standard used by ENERGY STAR to regulate LED lighting products.
UL has been evaluating and testing lighting products since 1929 and has 20 years of experience in LED lighting product testing. This acquisition will add UL's ability to test and strengthen market leadership, and further bring more integrated security and performance testing services to the lighting industry. After the merger officially takes effect, LTL will become part of UL's Verification Service business.
In addition to the M&A progress with LTL, UL also officially announced the safety standards for LED lighting products and related components at the end of 2009—ANSI/UL 8750. The first edition of the standard has established a global safety standards platform for LED lighting equipment and component supply chain, providing a fair detection basis for the LED industry. UL continues to develop in the field of LED testing, and is expected to drive more R&D investment in LED lighting products and expand the scale of the global industry.
