Vivo this fingerprint recognition technology became the first to be more powerful than Apple's Samsung!

Electronic enthusiasts eight o'clock: Although Apple and Samsung want to be the first company to install fingerprint scanners under the smartphone display, they are not able to do so, because China's smartphone maker vivo has done this.

Vivo will jointly release this technology at the World Mobile Congress Shanghai Station and Qualcomm on Wednesday. But before the official release, vivo provided Mashable with key details, images and videos of the technology.

The fingerprint sensor can finally be installed below the display.

First, let's see why this technology is important. The trend in the dominant smartphone market this year is to make the screen of the mobile phone as large as possible. Companies such as Samsung, LG and EssenTIal have launched ultra-widescreen smartphones, and most of the panels of the mobile phone are covered by the screen.

These new phones have one common drawback: in order to adapt to the large screen, the physical home button can no longer be installed in the overall design. Therefore, they need to transfer the fingerprint scanner to another location, usually to the back of the phone.

This sensor works by penetrating glass or even metal plates.

But Apple's upcoming iPhone 8 has no rumors in this regard. Instead, Apple is said to be moving the fingerprint scanner directly into the phone screen. It is said that Samsung is also trying to use a similar design in the Galaxy S8 flagship phone, but it is likely to miss the next spring's conference.

Let's talk about vivo. The Chinese company's solution is called "vivo Under Display" (vivo under the display), which is a fingerprint sensor that can be mounted on a glass, OLED screen or even an aluminum surface, so that the fingerprint sensor can be used. Completely hidden in places you can't see.

The sensor used in vivo is an ultrasonic sensor. This is not a new technology. In fact, Qualcomm has developed an ultrasonic sensor and has applied it to some mobile phones, such as the Mi Mi Mi 5s. It works by penetrating the skin of the finger by emitting ultrasound and then capturing a precise 3D image of your fingerprint.

However, the ultrasound from the vivo sensor can also penetrate glass, aluminum and OLED screens, which is currently not possible with other similar technologies. More precisely, the vivo Under Display can penetrate a 1.3 mm OLED screen, a 525 micron aluminum plate or an 800 micron glass plate. In contrast, Qualcomm's technology can only penetrate 400 micron glass plates, and capacitive scanners can only capture images behind a 300 micron glass plate.

Instead of transferring the fingerprint sensor to the back of the phone, press the phone in a specific area on the screen to lock the screen.

This is enough for a mobile phone manufacturer to install the fingerprint sensor under the display. This solution is obviously better than transferring the fingerprint sensor to other places. There are other benefits to this solution, such as the sensor is not affected by ambient light, and there is no need to worry about the sensitivity of the sensor due to rain, sweat or other water stains. Vivo also plans to develop a fingerprint sensor solution that works underwater.

But don't be too excited, because we haven't tried the technology myself.

Vivo provided us with a video (this video was recently leaked) and some new images of this technology. From the video display, this solution works very easily, perhaps a bit slower than the latest generation of standard fingerprint sensors, but still fast enough, and the response speed is within acceptable limits.

However, what needs to be reminded is that this is just a proof of concept. Although vivo said the company plans to integrate this sensor into its products in the future, it has not yet released a real product with this new sensor.

    Looking to the future

Even with a cautious and prudent attitude, the news announced by vivo is also very important, because it shows us the direction of the development of smart phones, it may let us see the most notable feature of Apple's upcoming iPhone 8. Although Apple will not use the vivo solution, vivo's spokesperson told us that the company expects Apple to use a similar technology developed by Apple on the upcoming iPhone.

As for Samsung, the current report is a bit confusing. Regarding whether Samsung will provide this configuration in the upcoming Galaxy Note 8, reports from different media are contradictory.

But we still have a problem: when the eyes are not looking at the phone, how to find the location of the sensor?

The news we got from vivo is that Samsung does not seem to use the technology of vivo. It is reported that Samsung is working with SynapTIcs to develop a fingerprint scanner embedded under the display.

Still, it makes sense to see this solution for vivo. We look forward to getting a real machine sample as soon as possible and experience this invisible fingerprint sensor.
