The exclusive live interview at the 2017 Future Science Awards Ceremony is currently taking place. In a conversation with Wang Yu, an associate professor at Tsinghua University and co-founder of Shenjian Technology, Dawn Song, a computer science professor at the University of California, Berkeley, discussed the growing challenges that artificial intelligence (AI) presents in terms of security. She highlighted that AI systems today still lack the ability to learn automatically and adapt on their own.
As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, Dawn Song pointed out that its increasing use will also attract more cyber threats. She emphasized that ensuring the security of AI systems is critical, especially as they face attacks that could lead to incorrect decisions or responses. This means AI must be designed not only to perform well but also to remain resilient under pressure.
According to Song, AI is still in its early stages of development. While it has made great progress, there's a long way to go before it can truly understand and adapt to new situations autonomously. She noted that humans, even at a very young age, are capable of quickly learning and applying knowledge in new contexts—an ability that current AI systems do not possess. This gap, she believes, is one of the key areas for future research.
When asked about the impact of AI on employment, Song expressed a balanced view. While AI may enhance productivity and support human work in certain fields, she does not believe it will lead to widespread job loss. Instead, she sees AI as a tool that complements human capabilities, working alongside people rather than replacing them. There's a strong synergy between human creativity and AI efficiency, she said.
During the discussion on child education, Song advised parents to focus on teaching children how to think critically and solve problems, rather than simply emphasizing academic performance. She stressed that the ability to analyze and adapt is far more valuable than just achieving high scores. By fostering these skills, children can better prepare themselves for an increasingly complex and technology-driven world.
