DoE funded research and development projects for lighting renovation

Beneficiaries include companies, universities, and research institutions working on LED and OLED R&D projects.

LEDs Magazine reports: The US DoE hosted the seventh multi-year SSL working group meeting with 350 members. DoE uses "lighting retrofits" as the theme of the seminar to reward R&D project teams working on LED and OLED projects.

According to DoE, the winners are considered to have created “the most breakthrough and fulfilling sense of 2009” projects with universities, companies and research and development institutions.

The DOE recognizes a team at the University of Florida who has achieved a blue-fluorescent OLED with a light efficiency of 59 lm/W, and several research institutions have won this award, including the National Laboratory of San Diego and the National Laboratory of Los Alamos. The DOE commended the efforts of the ancestors in improving the efficiency of green LEDs and the subsequent research on materials for low-cost OLED manufacturing.

The rest of the winners are profit-making companies such as PhosphorTech, which has won DOE awards for developing advanced fluorescent materials to improve the efficacy of LED lights. Both Arkema and Universal Display have made a difference in the field of OLED. The former received the DOE award for the development of a low-cost alternative to low-cost indium materials for OLED anodes, while the latter focused on warm white OLED panels with a luminous efficacy of 68 lm/W.

The last three winners are focused on LED lighting projects. Cree has made significant advances in multi-chip LED prototypes, enabling industrial-grade LEDs to achieve 117 lm/W. Philips Lumileds Lighting's warm white LEDs achieve 83 lm/W, and Osram Sylvania development is widely recognized for its warm white LED illuminator system for downlight applications.
