i9-7980XE starting: 18 cores 36 threads box can music day

Intel's latest Extreme i9/i7 and X299 platform has been on the market for a while now, and we've already taken a look at the i7-7820X and i9-7900X reviews. The top-tier i9-7980XE was just officially announced, and we managed to get our hands on it—haha! With 18 cores and 36 threads, this is truly an impressive processor. Let's dive in and see what it's all about.

    Intel i9-7980XE

    New i9, New XE Suffix

New Extreme Platform Processor Account Book
Introducing the i9-7980XE, the flagship of Intel’s new Extreme platform. This chip features 18 cores and 36 threads, outperforming AMD’s Threadripper 1950X by two more cores. It has a base clock speed of 2.6GHz, which seems low given the number of cores, but that's completely normal. However, with Intel’s Turbo Boost Max 3.0 technology, it can push a single core up to 4.4GHz, making it incredibly powerful for single-threaded tasks—way better than the i7-7700K.

The i9-7980XE also supports four-channel DDR4-2666 memory and offers an impressive number of PCIe 3.0 lanes, which is great for high-end builds. But one thing that stands out is its TDP, which has increased to 165W—making it the most power-hungry desktop CPU from Intel so far. From our experience with the i7-7820X, we expect this monster to run quite hot, especially under load.

    Still Using Grease?

    i9-7980XE Thermal Paste
Surprisingly, the i9-7980XE still uses thermal paste instead of solder. Some overseas reviewers have already opened their units and found the same grease used on previous generations. That’s a bit disappointing, especially for a top-tier processor. As a tech enthusiast, I’m not too happy about this decision.

    Top Performance, Top Price

    i9-7980XE Pricing

Currently, the i9-7980XE is available on various platforms, with prices ranging from 13,999 to 18,000 RMB. For comparison, the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X costs around 8,500 RMB. So, the i9-7980XE is roughly twice as expensive. While performance is obviously better, it's unlikely to be twice as fast as the 1950X. Still, for those who want the best, this is the way to go.

    Size Matters

    i9-7980X vs i7-8700K
Compared to the mainstream i7-8700K, the i9-7980XE is significantly larger. It uses the LGA2066 socket, which is incompatible with older X99 motherboards. The size is big, and the number of pins is much higher, making it a real beast in terms of physical design.

    Backside Comparison
The backside shows just how complex the layout is. More pins mean more connectivity and potential for expansion, but also more heat and power consumption.

After installing the CPU on the motherboard and booting it up, we took some screenshots to check its performance. Here’s what we found:

    CPU-Z Info

BIOS settings were left at default, and we confirmed that this is the Step 4 Engineering Sample version. Official versions should be nearly identical once released through proper channels.

The i9-7980XE has 18 cores and 36 threads, with a 24.75MB L3 cache. Its base frequency is 1.2GHz, and it can boost up to 4.2GHz. With TB 3.0, it can reach 4.4GHz when needed.

Seeing 36 threads active is pretty cool. It's exciting to see such a powerful processor in action. I'm really looking forward to the full performance tests coming soon.

This is just the first part of our review. We're currently running extensive performance tests, and the full review will be published this week. Be sure to follow PConline's DIY channel for more updates. Join our DIY fans' QQ group to stay in the loop!
