On the morning of October 21st, during the Seventeenth China Virtual Reality Conference, the Seventh International Virtual Reality and Visualization Conference, and the Third China (Zhengzhou) Virtual Reality Conference, Academician Zhao Yuping, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the Key Laboratory of Virtual Reality Technology and System, as well as the China Simulation Society, delivered an insightful speech. He emphasized that virtual reality is set to bring transformative changes across multiple fields, including 2D and 3D display technologies, breaking through traditional screen limitations, and enabling new experimental platforms in various industries. He also highlighted the potential to create a virtual representation of physical objects within any space-time environment.
"With the advancement of VR, especially its expansion into the medical field, the virtual human body has become a fundamental building block. Given the complexity of the human body, it can be considered the ultimate goal of VR," Zhao explained. The virtual human body involves the dynamic and static acquisition of real human bodies, along with the creation of a digital model based on geometry and physics. This modeling process is highly complex, involving vast time and spatial scales. From a spatial perspective, the target can range from atomic levels to the scale of entire organs, spanning from nanometers to meters. On the time scale, it covers everything from microseconds to the lifespan of a human being, making it a truly multidimensional challenge.
Zhao further stated that achieving detailed physiological models of the human body, along with brain and intelligence-related models, is the ultimate goal of the virtual human project. This requires collaborative research across disciplines such as molecular biology, biophysics, systems biology, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence.
He also predicted that VR technology will have a profound impact on the future, particularly in life sciences and medicine, where it could drive unprecedented and revolutionary developments over the next decade. VR is expected to serve as a new platform for translational medical research, offering innovative experimental methods that support surgical planning, training, and the development of new procedures and drugs.
"The advancement of patient physiology modeling, the creation of new software platforms, and the availability of accessible data are all driving progress in bio-simulation technology," Zhao noted. "Dynamic simulation of biological systems represents the latest breakthrough in medical simulation, going beyond basic chemistry and molecular structures. The application of bio-simulation in drug development will meet the pharmaceutical industry's need for new treatment approaches, reducing R&D risks and costs associated with tackling difficult diseases."
VR Network will continue to cover the latest trends in the domestic virtual reality industry, so stay tuned for more updates.
