Raising knowledge: UAVs are like this to achieve wireless image transmission.

The increasing use of drones across various fields has brought significant convenience to industries such as daily life, scientific research, and commerce. When a single person controls a drone to perform tasks, it may seem simple at first glance, but the drone is actually capable of completing complex operations. These tasks generally consist of three main components: the flight control system, the pan/tilt camera setup, and the wireless image transmission system. Among these, the wireless image transmission system is often referred to as the "eyes of the drone." Vision Crystal will guide you through how to implement wireless image transmission in drone design.

Application of drone in electric power inspection

The 2.4GHz full HD UAV map transmission system is currently the most widely used solution. In drone video transmission, high-end wireless systems can achieve up to 5km range with 1080P 30fps video, but many domestic entertainment drone manufacturers have not yet reached this level. Most commonly, they use a PTZ camera to capture images from high altitudes and then bring the drone back to view the footage. This method is not suitable for real-time aerial photography, as the live feed is not available during flight.

The core device of the drone image transmission system is the 2.4GHz transmitter. Although the 433MHz band offers strong penetration and long communication distance—up to 2 kilometers—it lacks sufficient interference resistance and is not suitable for long-range drones or aircraft. Currently, professional WiFi chip manufacturers like Broadcom and Qualcomm have not developed chips specifically for long-distance high-definition video transmission. However, with the growing demand in the drone market, wireless chip manufacturers are already planning to launch dedicated chips. In the future, we might see dual-mode chips that support both control signals and video transmission simultaneously.

Before the availability of specialized chips, RF engineers can still implement long-distance, high-bandwidth wireless video transmission using discrete components. For 2.4GHz transmitters used in drones, key requirements include high receive sensitivity, low power consumption, compact size, and advanced channel management features. Cypress's 2.4GHz single-chip radio transceiver Wireless USB has been widely adopted in drones and successfully used for both control signals and video transmission. The latest fourth-generation Wireless USB NX transceiver not only maintains ultra-low power performance but also offers a data rate of 2Mbps, reducing transmission and reception times. Compared to competitors, it provides higher integration and better value for money in the 2.4GHz ISM band.

Choosing the right PCBs for 2.4GHz transceivers is also crucial. RF circuit design remains one of the most challenging aspects of system development. In addition to high receiver sensitivity, high-performance microwave boards are essential. Rogers' high-performance microwave boards are particularly well-suited for 2.4GHz applications in drone image transmission systems. High-performance PA/LNA/FILTER ICs ensure reliable long-distance transmission and strong anti-interference capabilities when combined with 2.4GHz transmitter ICs.

The MGA-22003 linear power amplifier module is a critical component for ensuring long-range image transmission, delivering stable performance under all load conditions. Its 3x3 mm package makes it ideal for space-constrained designs. Similarly, the ACFF-1024 miniaturized bandpass filter designed for the 2.4GHz band is perfect for drone image transmission systems, effectively eliminating external interference while supporting coexistence with WiFi and Bluetooth without performance degradation.

The MGA-64606 GaAs MMIC low-noise amplifier (LNA) is a preferred choice for many drone products. It significantly improves the overall received signal sensitivity of the drone’s image transmission system. Moreover, it features a switchable shutdown and bypass function, allowing it to be bypassed when input signal strength is high. This feature helps reduce current consumption and extend battery life, which is crucial for drones.

The MGA-412P8 WLAN power amplifier is ideal for mobile IEEE 802.11bg applications due to its small footprint, compact size, embedded power detection circuitry, and excellent power efficiency. It delivers a linear output power of 19.0 dBm at 3% EVM 54 Mbps data rate (OFDM modulation) and 23 dBm at 11 Mbps (CCCK modulation). In some 5.8GHz image transmission systems, such as the MGA-675T6 LNA and MGA-25203 PA, it can fully meet performance needs.

Drones have strict power supply requirements. In addition to low power consumption and high efficiency, the image transmission system must also maintain a high ripple rejection ratio. Shiqiang’s LDO voltage regulators are ideal for receiving end applications in drones. Shiqiang offers complete solutions from power supply to battery protection, helping customers select the right components.

Additionally, since drones are typically used outdoors, temperature compensation across the full operating range is essential. EPSON’s high-precision temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) technology leads the industry, offering accuracy up to 2ppm. This meets the environmental demands of UAV operation scenarios.

This concludes our overview of how Vision Wireless enables UAVs to achieve wireless image transmission and highlights the mainstream products available today. We hope this information proves helpful to those looking for reliable drone imaging solutions.
