Is the next generation of SteamVR difficult to produce? "Steam Developer Day" may be suspended for two years

Steam Dev Days, a semi-annual event hosted by Valve, has long been a valuable opportunity for developers to learn, connect, and gain insights into the future of gaming. With its cancellation this year, many in the development community are feeling a sense of loss. It's clear that the event played an important role in fostering innovation and collaboration within the Steam ecosystem.

Valve's Tom Giardino confirmed on Twitter that there will be no Steam Dev Days in 2017, and it's unlikely the event will return in 2018. However, he also encouraged the community to share their thoughts on what they'd like to see from future Valve events. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many users expressing interest in learning more about the Steam Controller, the status of the Knuckles VR controller, or even revisiting past Steam Dev Days topics. Some were curious about ongoing projects, such as the VR initiatives that Greg Coomer previously mentioned.

Historically, Steam Dev Days has covered a wide range of subjects, including virtual reality, server infrastructure, game development tools, and new features for the Steam platform. The event has also served as a stage for Valve to showcase upcoming products, like the second-generation Lighthouse tracking system, new VR controllers, and the announcement that SteamVR would soon be available on Linux and macOS. These updates have helped shape the evolving landscape of PC gaming and VR technology.

With two consecutive years of no Steam Dev Days, some speculate that Valve may be focusing on internal development rather than public events. This could mean that the next generation of SteamVR technology is still in the works, but not yet ready for a major reveal. While the absence of the event leaves a gap in the developer community, it's possible that Valve is preparing something bigger for the future.
