Issues in the selection of DCS - Database & Sql Blog Articles

    After determining the controlled object, selecting the appropriate control system becomes a critical decision. The choice is primarily influenced by the project scale and budget. While digital DCS systems and traditional analog instrumentation have similar implementation processes, the main differences lie in project size and financial considerations. However, compared to analog instruments, DCS systems are more complex and technically demanding. In theory, DCS systems can be applied across various industries due to their versatility. However, most DCS manufacturers specialize in specific fields. For example, Honeywell is commonly used in the petrochemical industry, Bailey’s N90 and INFI90 are widely adopted in power plants, and Rosemount’s RS3 and Δ-V are popular in chemical applications. Despite this, different industries often have unique requirements—such as the need for ESC equipment and SOE in power plants, selective control in petrochemicals, or large pure hysteresis compensation in cement production. Economic factors also play a major role in DCS selection. Domestic DCS systems are generally more affordable than imported ones, although imported systems may offer more advanced control algorithms, such as Smith prediction and 3D matrix calculations. The price difference between domestic and foreign systems is significant, with foreign operating stations often using minicomputers that are far more expensive than PC-based systems. While PC-based systems are cheaper and more flexible, they may not be as stable as UNIX-based systems. Additionally, communication networks vary in cost—general Ethernet is low-cost, while proprietary network interfaces can be extremely expensive. Another important factor is the technical strength of the contractor. A contractor unfamiliar with both the process and the DCS system may lead to poor engineering outcomes. Some contractors may claim expertise but lack real experience, resulting in system instability or failures. It's essential to choose a reliable contractor who has a proven track record in the specific application. After-sales service is equally crucial. Foreign manufacturers often charge high prices for spare parts and may not provide timely support. In contrast, domestic DCS suppliers typically offer better availability and customer service. Moreover, rapid technological advancements mean that DCS systems must remain compatible with future upgrades. Some manufacturers release immature products to emerging markets, which can lead to early obsolescence and system failures. In summary, DCS systems have been widely used for over two decades and are generally reliable. Choosing the right system involves more than just considering project size and budget—it requires evaluating technical capabilities, economic feasibility, and long-term support. A well-informed decision at the beginning can significantly impact the system’s success and longevity.
