I. Overview
When preparing project files for a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) screen, software modification and debugging are essential steps in the development process. Most HMI configuration tools with touch functionality offer an offline mode that allows engineers to debug the project without connecting to a PLC. This makes it easier to fine-tune the HMI design before deployment.
However, when working with small text HMIs, many of the configuration tools do not support offline simulation. As a result, engineers often have to repeatedly connect the HMI to a PLC during the development phase, which can be time-consuming and inefficient. To address this issue, we introduce a serial device emulator that simulates the Modbus RTU Slave protocol. This tool enables engineers to debug and modify HMI projects directly on their PCs without needing a physical PLC connection.
II. Introduction to Modbus_Simulator Software
Modbus_Simulator is a public domain software designed to simulate Modbus RTU Slave devices, making it ideal for testing Modbus RTU Master devices. The software is completely free to use and does not require registration. If you encounter any bugs while using it, please let us know so we can improve it further. You can download and install it from our company’s official website by simply clicking the Modbus_Sim icon after unpacking the file.
The software runs on the Windows operating system. Once you launch Modbus_Sim.exe, a window will appear. Alternatively, you can select the "Connect" option under the "Communication" menu to ensure that the POP-HMI text interface communicates properly with the Modbus RTU Slave device being emulated by the software.
III. How to Use Modbus_Simulator
After launching the software, navigate to the working screen and select the data registers you want to view or configure based on your project requirements. This allows you to effectively debug the POP-HMI text interface.
If the project file created by the JB-HMI configuration software doesn't meet the design criteria, disconnect the Modbus_Sim from the display and return to step one to make adjustments. Repeat this process until the project meets all the required specifications.
