The NCP3065 is a 1.5 amp monolithic switching regulator with an extremely low 235 millivolt feedback voltage. This feedback voltage is used to regulate the average current of the LED string in a constant current regulator configuration. This extremely low feedback voltage also allows designers to use more sensitive and cost-competitive sensing resistors. Compared to competing devices that use a standard 1.25 volt (V) feedback voltage, the NCP3065 reduces the power consumption of the sense resistor by 80%, resulting in an overall system performance improvement of 2%. The NCP3065's internal reference voltage is trimmed to 2%, providing extremely accurate and stable flow over a wide range of input voltages, LED forward voltages, and inductor tolerances.
The device's wide input voltage – from 3 V to 40 V – enables operation in 12 Vac and 12 Vdc power supplies commonly used in lighting applications and unregulated power supplies such as lead-acid batteries. The device can be configured as a controller topology with an external transistor to support a higher LED current than the 1.5 A rated switching current of the internal transistor. The external switch also has a higher output voltage when using a boost configuration.
