Qualcomm estimates weak demand for mobile device chips

Reuters, January 27 – Qualcomm (QCOM.O) has lowered its forecast for current quarterly earnings, falling short of analyst expectations. This comes as the mobile device market slows down and demand for its chips weakens. The company now anticipates a 16–25% drop in mobile chip shipments compared to the same period last year. Its major clients include Apple (AAPL.O), which is also facing its own challenges. In addition, Qualcomm expects a decline of 4–14% in shipments of 3G and 4G devices, which could negatively impact its licensing revenue. Just a day earlier, Apple announced that it might see its first revenue decline in 13 years, with the lowest iPhone shipment growth on record. The Chinese market, a key driver for the tech industry, is showing signs of slowing down. These trends suggest that the era of rapid expansion in the high-tech sector may be coming to an end. Following the announcement, Qualcomm's stock dropped by 3% after market close on Wednesday. During the post-earnings conference call, the company revised its outlook for high-end product shipments, citing that one of its major customers experienced slower-than-expected sell-through. Mobile device chip sales fell 10% in the first quarter, dragging down equipment and service revenues by 21.6%. Licensing revenue also declined by 10.4%. **Weak Outlook** For the second quarter, Qualcomm expects adjusted earnings per share (EPS) to range between $0.90 and $1.00, below the average analyst estimate of $1.01. Its revenue forecast of $4.9–5.7 billion is also significantly lower than the $5.68 billion expected by analysts. This revised guidance highlights growing concerns about the future performance of the semiconductor giant amid a broader slowdown in the tech sector. Investors are closely watching how Qualcomm will navigate these challenges in the coming months.
