Lenovo's share price fell 10%: smartphone business turned losses

In the third quarter of its 2015/16 fiscal year, which ended on December 31, 2015, Lenovo Group (0992.HK) reported a revenue decline of 8% to $12.9 billion, excluding currency exchange effects. This marked a smaller drop compared to the previous year’s 2% decrease. The gross profit margin slightly dropped by 0.3 percentage points to 14.6%, while operating expenses fell by 15% to $1.5 billion. Notably, net profit increased by 19% to $300 million. Analysts, according to Thomson Reuters SmartEstimates, had expected revenue of $13.21 billion and net profit of $237.7 million for the quarter. The personal computer business saw a 12% year-on-year revenue decline to $8.033 billion. However, the company managed to increase its market share in the consumer PC segment by 1.3% to 19.7%, and in the commercial PC market by 1.6% to 23.4%, marking a significant achievement. For the mobile business, revenue decreased by 4% to $3.245 billion, but this was a 5% increase when excluding exchange rate fluctuations. Lenovo attributed the improvement in operational efficiency to restructuring efforts, leading to the first balanced performance in the mobile division. In the same quarter, global smartphone sales dropped by 18% (or rose by 7% when adjusted for external factors), reaching 20.2 million units. The global market share fell by 1.5 percentage points to 5.1%, placing Lenovo in fourth position. Outside of China, smart machine sales increased by 15% to 16.7 million units, with the proportion of such sales rising from 83% to 83% compared to the previous year. In the first three quarters of the 2015/16 fiscal year, Lenovo’s revenue in China declined by 14% to $10 billion, with local revenue falling 14% to $3.52 billion in the third quarter alone. The company mentioned that it has cleared its mobile phone inventory and is now expanding its product range to reinvigorate growth in the domestic market. The 1-3 quarter net loss for the 2015/16 fiscal year reached $308 million, significantly lower than the net profit of $729 million recorded in the same period the previous year. According to IDC, global PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2015 fell by 10.6% to 71.9 million units, marking the biggest annual decline since 2008. Total shipments for 2015 dropped by 10.4% to 276 million units, falling below the 300 million threshold for the first time since 2008.
