On December 3, Ma Huateng, Chairman and CEO of Tencent, delivered a speech at the 4th World Internet Conference, emphasizing that Tencent aims to evolve into a technology and culture-driven company, with innovation at its core. He highlighted how Chinese companies have shifted from being mere followers of new technologies to becoming key drivers and contributors on the global stage. This transformation requires collaboration with international partners to shape the future of technology.
At the “Internet Light†exhibition, Tencent showcased several cutting-edge products, including Yingying, Xiaowei, Biographer, and Tiantian P, demonstrating advancements in AI and VR. These innovations not only highlight Tencent’s technological prowess but also aim to enhance cultural experiences through digital means, making them more accessible and engaging for the public.
During the plenary session, Ma Huateng discussed the rapid growth of the digital economy, noting that seven of the top ten most valuable companies globally are tech firms. He stressed the importance of responsibility, outlining three key areas: innovation, empowerment, and governance. He emphasized that as the digital landscape evolves, companies must take an active role in shaping it, ensuring ethical and sustainable development.
Tencent has made significant strides in AI research, establishing a company-level AI Lab and opening its first overseas lab in Seattle. One notable project is the AI-powered medical imaging tool developed by Tencent Video, which assists doctors in analyzing scans more efficiently. The company is collaborating with leading hospitals across China to improve diagnostic accuracy, particularly in areas like esophageal cancer and diabetes.
The integration of digital technology with traditional industries is another focus area. Ma Huateng pointed out that the digital economy and real-world sectors are converging, and Tencent is working to empower various industries through smart solutions. For example, the Tencent Travel Code has been successfully implemented in cities like Hefei, Guangzhou, and Chongqing, streamlining public transportation by allowing users to scan QR codes via WeChat. This innovation not only saves time but also enhances safety and convenience for travelers.
In terms of governance, Ma Huateng addressed the growing need for collaborative efforts in managing the digital space. He mentioned the concept of a “cyber destiny community,†where governments, businesses, and civil society must work together to address challenges related to data privacy, ethics, and online safety. Tencent has already taken steps in this direction, launching the “Growth Guard Platform†to help parents monitor their children’s gaming activities, covering over 200 game titles.
Ma Huateng concluded his speech by reaffirming Tencent’s commitment to playing a constructive role in the global digital ecosystem. He expressed hope that the company will continue to contribute to the “China Program†and become a vital part of the “Cyber Destiny Community.†His message was one of shared responsibility, innovation, and a vision for a more connected and inclusive digital future.
