STMicroelectronics' new ultra-thin low-dropout regulator in a breakthrough bumpless wafer-level package

STMicroelectronics, a leading global semiconductor supplier (NYSE: STM), has introduced the LDBL20, a 200mA low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator designed for compact and power-efficient applications. This new device comes in an ultra-small 0.47mm x 0.47mm x 0.2mm wafer-level package, making it ideal for wearables, portable electronics, and smart cards that require high performance in minimal space. The LDBL20 utilizes ST’s STAMPTM bumpless packaging technology, which overcomes traditional limitations in flip-chip design by allowing smaller I/O areas and reduced package height. This innovation results in one of the smallest LDO regulators available on the market today. It joins ST’s growing family of compact LDOs, including previous models like the 0.69mm x 0.69mm wafer-level package and 2mm x 2mm DFN packages with up to 300mA output current. Beyond its size, the LDBL20 delivers excellent performance. It provides a 200mA output current, matching or exceeding similar offerings from other manufacturers in larger packages. The output voltage range spans from 1.5V to 5.5V, with a typical dropout voltage of just 200mV. Its power supply rejection ratios (PSRR) are 80dB at 100Hz and 50dB at 100kHz, helping reduce noise and simplify filter designs in wideband circuits. The quiescent current is only 20μA under no load, rising to 100μA at full load, and drops to 0.3μA in standby mode—making it highly efficient for battery-powered devices. The LDBL20 supports adjustable output voltages from 0.8V to 5.0V in 50mV increments, offering flexibility for various applications. It includes advanced internal features such as logic-controlled shutdown, soft start, and optional active discharge of the output voltage when needed. To help developers integrate the LDBL20 into their designs, ST has also released the STEVAL-ISB034V1 evaluation board. This tool supports a wide range of applications, including fitness trackers, blood pressure monitors, glucose meters, hearing aids, wearable sensors, smart earbuds, portable audio devices, smart sockets, smartwatches, and more. The LDBL20 is now in mass production and is available for purchase. For detailed specifications and additional information, visit the official STMicroelectronics product page.
