Universal board selection and welding methods and techniques

The universal circuit board, commonly known as a "hole board," is a type of printed circuit board (PCB) that features a standard IC pitch of 2.54mm, allowing for flexible and customizable connections. It's often used in prototyping due to its low cost, ease of use, and adaptability. Compared to professionally manufactured PCBs, hole boards are ideal for quick and simple projects, especially in student competitions where time is limited. Most projects are built using this type of board because it allows for fast assembly and modification. When choosing a hole board, there are two main types: single-hole boards and perforated boards. Single-hole boards have individual pads, while perforated boards have multiple connected pads. Single-hole boards can be either single-layer or double-layer. From personal experience, single-hole boards are more suitable for digital circuits and microcontroller-based designs, as these circuits tend to follow a more structured layout. Perforated boards, on the other hand, are better suited for analog and discrete component circuits, which often require more complex wiring and connections. It’s also important to distinguish between copper and tin-plated hole boards. Copper pads are golden in color and should be stored in newspaper to prevent oxidation. If they become tarnished, you can gently rub them with alcohol or an eraser to restore their solderability. Tin-plated boards have a silver-white surface and are harder, making them less prone to deformation. The price difference is notable—copper boards typically cost around 3–4 yuan per 100 cm², while tin boards range from 7–8 yuan. Before soldering, it's essential to prepare thin wires for connections. These wires come in single-strand and multi-strand varieties. Single-strand wires are rigid and can be bent into shape, making them ideal for jumpers. Multi-strand wires are softer but may appear messier when soldered. A fine-tipped soldering iron (around 30W) and thin solder wire (0.5–0.6 mm in diameter) are recommended to ensure precision and control during the process. For welding techniques, many people prefer to plan the layout first, starting with key components like ICs and building around them. This method is efficient but may not be ideal for beginners. A better approach is to sketch the layout on paper first, then transfer it to the board. When connecting components, flying wires are commonly used, and the goal is to keep the wiring neat and organized. Another technique involves using tin wire for connections, though this can be wasteful and requires careful execution. Some effective tips for working with hole boards include planning power and ground lines early, using component pins creatively, and making good use of jumpers to simplify connections. Additionally, using pin headers can help create mechanical and electrical connections between boards, similar to how computer motherboards are connected. You can also cut copper foil on perforated boards to optimize space and take full advantage of double-layer boards by using them as vias for better connectivity. Finally, always make sure to utilize every inch of the board, such as hiding components inside chip holders for a cleaner look and added protection. With some practice and smart techniques, the hole board becomes a powerful tool in your electronics projects, offering flexibility and reliability without the need for expensive custom PCBs.
