Ericsson has released the latest edition of the Action Trend Report and the Action Business Trend Report, offering insights into the future of 5G networks. According to the report, by 2021, the global number of 5G mobile users is expected to reach 150 million. South Korea, Japan, China, and the United States are set to be among the first countries to adopt 5G technology, paving the way for new applications and innovations in the digital world.
The report highlights how 5G will connect a wide range of devices, enabling new Internet-based services and transforming the ICT (information and communication technology) landscape. This shift is expected to create new opportunities across various industries and vertical markets. As part of this transformation, mobile video usage is projected to grow significantly between 2015 and 2021, driving an increase in data traffic per smartphone.
In North America and Europe, the average monthly data usage per smartphone is expected to rise from 3.8GB to 22GB in North America, and from 2GB to 18GB in Western Europe. Additionally, the global addition of 20 new mobile broadband users every second further fuels the growth of data consumption. By 2016, the number of smartphone users worldwide is expected to surpass 4 billion.
Rima Qureshi, Senior Vice President and Strategy Director at Ericsson, emphasized that 5G is more than just faster connectivity—it represents a new era of diverse usage scenarios. For instance, Ericsson has already developed a prototype platform that uses 5G networks and data analytics to improve mass transit systems, reduce congestion, and minimize environmental impact. As 5G continues to roll out over the next few years, it will drive deeper transformations across industries, reshaping the way we live and work.
