There may be industry boom next year when the 5G era is approaching

With the rapid development of communication technologies, people are increasingly seeking a better internet experience. After getting used to the fast browsing speeds of 3G, many can no longer tolerate the slow performance of 2G networks. Now, with the rise of 4G, even that feels outdated for some, especially when streaming high-definition videos causes frequent buffering. As 5G begins to emerge, people are wondering: when will it truly become part of our daily lives? Since the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced the first phase of 5G R&D testing last year, more than a year has passed. What progress has been made in the development of 5G technology? 5G is the next generation of mobile communication technology, known for its incredible speed—reaching up to 10 Gbps, which is over 100 times faster than 4G. A full HD movie could be downloaded in just one second. Beyond speed, 5G also offers large network capacity, ultra-low latency, and energy efficiency, making it possible for smart cities, wearable devices, and even remote surgeries to become reality. At the recent China International Information and Communication Exhibition in Beijing, a remotely controlled car captured attention. Using a 5G test network, the car was driven from a booth in Beijing while operating on roads 1,000 kilometers away in Shanghai. The driver could see the real-time video feed and control the vehicle with minimal delay—just 0.5 to 10 milliseconds. This level of precision allows for near-instantaneous control, with braking accuracy within 20 centimeters. China Mobile’s representative explained that they have set up a driving simulator with three high-definition screens and deployed 5G base stations in Shanghai’s Jiading area, connecting Beijing and Shanghai via 5G networks. China already has the world's largest 4G network, with over 2.789 million base stations, accounting for 60% of the global total. This strong infrastructure provides a solid foundation for 5G development. Currently, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom have begun constructing and testing 5G system prototypes in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Zhang Zhihua, a product manager at China Telecom’s Jiangsu branch, mentioned that the company plans small-scale commercial trials in six cities, followed by large-scale trials between June 2018 and December 2019, with full commercial deployment expected after 2020. Although the original target of 5G commercialization in 2020 has been slightly delayed, domestic companies are well-prepared in terms of 5G technology, system equipment, and upstream industrial chain readiness. In particular, breakthroughs in key areas like chip development show significant progress. ZTE’s chief scientist noted that China has proposed its own technical standards for 5G, with a higher proportion of independently developed technologies, such as critical baseband chips. China’s telecommunications industry has evolved from catching up during the 3G era, to keeping pace in the 4G era, and now leading in the 5G era. According to Wen Ku, director of the Department of Communication and Development at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China’s 5G technology experiments have entered the second phase, with most of the new air interface tests completed. Plans are underway to build 30 5G field stations in Huairou, Beijing. The third phase will focus on pre-commercial equipment, interconnection, and interoperability testing, aligning with international standards. Looking ahead, the industry expects that once the first phase of 5G standards is finalized next year, companies across the supply chain—including chip manufacturers, system vendors, and terminal application developers—will accelerate their efforts toward full 5G industrialization, potentially sparking a major market boom. Ma Jiancheng, general manager of Datang Mobile, predicts that China may enter the pre-commercial stage next year. With system equipment nearing practicality in terms of miniaturization and cost, he believes China is on track to lead the world in this phase.
