There may be industry boom next year when the 5G era is approaching

With the continuous evolution of communication technologies, people's demand for a better internet experience has grown significantly. After getting used to the fast browsing of 3G, many can no longer tolerate the slow speed of 2G, and now they've experienced the even faster 4G. Some users are already finding 3G too slow for streaming videos without interruptions. Now, 5G is on the horizon—how soon will it become part of our daily lives? Since the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced the first phase of 5G R&D testing last year, over a year and a half has passed. What progress has been made? 5G represents a new generation of mobile communication technology, offering much faster speeds than its predecessors. Its average network speed can reach up to 10 Gbps—over 100 times faster than 4G. This means a high-definition movie can be downloaded in just one second. Beyond speed, 5G also offers large network capacity, ultra-low latency, and energy efficiency. These features make it possible for smart cities, wearable devices, and even remote surgeries to move from concept to reality. At the recent China International Information and Communication Exhibition in Beijing, a test car caught attention. Using a 5G network, the car was remotely controlled from a booth, driving on roads 1,000 kilometers away in Shanghai. The driver could see the real-time video feed from the car, with a delay as low as 0.5–10 milliseconds and braking accuracy within 20 centimeters. This demonstrated the potential of 5G in autonomous driving and remote control. China currently has the world’s largest 4G network, with 2.789 million base stations, making up 60% of the global total. This strong foundation supports the development of 5G. Major operators like China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom have already started building and testing 5G prototypes in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Zhang Zhihua, a product manager at China Telecom’s Jiangsu branch, mentioned that small-scale commercial trials would begin in six cities, followed by larger-scale trials from June 2018 to December 2019, with full commercial deployment expected after 2020. Although China had aimed for 5G commercial use by 2020, companies are already well-prepared in terms of technology, system equipment, and upstream industries. Particularly in key areas like 5G chips, Chinese firms have made significant breakthroughs. According to ZTE’s chief scientist, the 5G standard is very demanding, but the company has developed its own technical standards, with a higher proportion of self-researched components—especially in critical areas like baseband chips. China’s telecom industry has moved from catching up during the 3G era, to synchronizing during the 4G era, and now leading in 5G. Wen Ku, director of the Department of Communication and Development under MIIT, noted that China’s 5G technology experiments have entered the second phase, with most of the new air interface tests completed. Plans are underway to build 30 5G field stations in Huairou, Beijing. Looking ahead, the third phase of 5G experiments will align with international standards, focusing on pre-commercial equipment performance and interoperability. As technologies mature, so do the standards, with some indicators surpassing initial expectations. Industry experts predict that with the completion of the first 5G standards next year, chip manufacturers, system vendors, and terminal companies will fully invest in 5G industrialization, potentially sparking an industry boom. Ma Jiancheng, general manager of Datang Mobile, believes that China is expected to enter the pre-commercial stage next year. With system equipment nearing practicality in terms of size and cost, he anticipates that China will lead the world into the pre-commercial phase.
