Mr. Xue, an engineer based in Beijing's Zhongguancun, recently found himself at the center of a legal battle after purchasing two Sharp TVs online that were later found to be unsafe. The TVs, which he bought for his new home renovation, were tested by a state-recognized third-party agency and deemed "injury-free" but still failed safety standards. This led Mr. Xue to take legal action against Sharp, demanding refunds and compensation for the inspection costs.
The case began when Mr. Xue purchased a 50-inch Sharp LCD-50NX100A TV for 2,999 yuan on July 21, 2017, from Jingdong, and a 45-inch Sharp LCD-45SF460A model for 1,988 yuan on August 2. Shortly after installation, he noticed a noticeable depression on the back cover of one of the TVs. Initially thinking it was a fixed screw, he removed the label and discovered a large hole instead. Using a household voltage tester, he found that the hole was live with 220 volts, posing a serious risk of electric shock.
Concerned about the potential danger, Mr. Xue contacted Shenzhen Xinxuan Standard Technical Service Co., Ltd., a nationally recognized testing agency, to assess the safety of both TVs. According to the national mandatory standard GB 8898-2011, both TVs failed the safety test. The 50-inch model was found to have a risk of electric shock, while the 45-inch model could experience high-voltage spikes during unstable grid conditions, potentially causing severe injury or even death if touched.
Fearing the consequences, especially for families with children, Mr. Xue decided to take legal action. On October 11, 2017, he officially filed a lawsuit with the Chaoyang District People’s Court in Beijing, which has since accepted the case. The incident has raised concerns about product safety and consumer rights, highlighting the importance of thorough quality checks before purchasing high-risk electronics.
