Mr. Xue, an engineer based in Beijing's Zhongguancun, recently found himself at the center of a legal battle after purchasing two Sharp TVs online that were later found to be unsafe. The TVs, bought for his new home renovation, were tested by a state-recognized third-party agency and deemed "injury-free" but still failed safety standards. This led Mr. Xue to file a lawsuit against Sharp, demanding a refund and compensation for inspection costs.
On July 21, 2017, Mr. Xue purchased a 50-inch Sharp LCD-50NX100A TV from Jingdong for 2,999 yuan. A few days later, he also bought a 45-inch Sharp LCD-45SF460A model for 1,988 yuan. After installation, he noticed a noticeable depression on the back panel of one of the TVs, which he initially thought was a screw. Upon removing the nameplate, he discovered that the depression contained a hole instead of a screw, and using a household voltage tester, he found that it had a voltage of 220V — a serious safety hazard.
Concerned about the potential danger, Mr. Xue contacted Shenzhen Xinxuan Standard Technical Service Co., Ltd., a nationally recognized testing agency. Their reports revealed that both TVs failed to meet the national safety standard GB 8898-2011. The 50-inch model posed an electric shock risk, while the 45-inch TV could generate high-voltage spikes during unstable grid conditions, potentially causing life-threatening shocks to anyone touching its metal parts.
Mr. Xue, who has a young child at home, was deeply worried about the risks involved. He decided to take legal action and filed a formal lawsuit with the Chaoyang District People's Court on October 11, 2017. The case was accepted by the court, marking the beginning of a long legal process. As the case unfolds, it raises important questions about product safety and consumer rights, especially when it comes to high-end electronics that are supposed to be safe for everyday use.
