Apple has remained quiet about the exact sales figures of its Apple Watch. During the recent earnings call, the company only revealed that Apple Watch sales had grown by 50% year-over-year. To get more detailed numbers, we have to rely on data from independent research firms.
According to a report from Canalys, in Q3 2017, Apple shipped 3.9 million Apple Watches worldwide. The LTE version of the Apple Watch Series 3 was particularly popular, with around 800,000 units sold during the quarter. It's worth noting that the Series 3 was launched near the end of September, and achieving such high shipment numbers in such a short time highlights its strong market appeal.
Interestingly, the LTE model is not yet available in China, but Canalys predicts that once local carriers support it, sales will see a significant boost.
The same report shows that Apple remains the largest wearable device manufacturer globally. Xiaomi and Fitbit followed in second and third place, with shipments of 3.6 million and 3.5 million respectively. Overall, global wearable device shipments reached 17.3 million in the third quarter.
This data gives us a clearer picture of where Apple stands in the competitive smartwatch market and how it continues to dominate despite limited transparency from the company itself. With new features and expanding carrier support, the future looks promising for the Apple Watch, especially in emerging markets like China.
