Develop industry standards, Mozilla will standardize mixed reality technology

    Mozilla recently announced its initiative to unify the approach to mixed reality (MR) and augmented reality (AR), aiming to ensure that users can seamlessly access immersive experiences across different devices. The company is working on frameworks and tools to enhance compatibility, allowing developers to build and deploy web-based immersive content more easily. Initially, the focus will be on integrating devices, headsets, development frameworks, and tools so that creators can choose from a variety of options to deliver rich, interactive experiences online—ensuring they all work together smoothly. Mozilla noted that standardizing VR has been smoother than AR, as there are already established APIs like WebVR in browsers such as Firefox, Oculus Browser, Samsung Internet, and Microsoft Edge. Popular VR development frameworks like A-Frame and ReactVR have also gained traction. However, the situation for AR is more fragmented. Currently, there’s no universal way to create a single web page that works across VR headsets, desktop AR devices like the Meta 2, mobile devices using ARKit or ARCore, standalone AR glasses like HoloLens or ODG R9, or even smart mirrors. To address this, Mozilla is pushing forward with a "mixed reality" strategy, proposing the WebXR API to support both AR and VR devices. This new API aims to bring consistency across platforms, including AR systems like HoloLens, Anchor in ARKit, and ARCore. Mozilla has also developed a WebXR viewer available on the App Store, making it easier for users to test and experience AR content directly. In addition, Mozilla is expanding browser support for 3D content. It's working on improving Firefox with broader 3D capabilities and developing a new 3D mobile browser platform using Servo. This effort is designed to support the latest generation of mixed reality headsets that have recently entered the market, ensuring a more immersive and accessible web experience for users.
