VR Network learned that Kevin Kelly, the founding editor of *Wired* magazine and author of *Out of Control*, recently attended the 2017 International Weekend in Longgang Tianan Cyber City, Shenzhen. During the event, he shared his insights on technology’s future, highlighting ten major trends shaping the digital age. Among them were ideas like data connectivity leading to a “technology super body,†the shift from ownership to access, and virtual reality evolving into a new form of social media.
“I truly believe we are living in the best time in history for creating value for customers,†Kelly said. He emphasized that the next 25 years might bring products we can’t even imagine today. “Now is the time to act. It’s never too late to do great things.â€
One of the key trends he discussed was the shift from fixed products to mobile formats. “From tangible to intangible, from static to fluid, from nouns to verbs, and from products to services,†he explained. This transformation affects all industries, including hardware. “Even if you’re building physical devices, you might be transitioning toward offering more service-based models. It’s a continuous, flowing process.â€
Another major trend was the power of data connectivity. “Data is the most mobile thing in the world,†Kelly noted. He compared traditional companies like Ford with modern ones like Tesla, pointing out that while Ford produced millions of cars, it lacked real-time data about how those vehicles were used. In contrast, Tesla collects massive amounts of data, making it not just a car company but a data-driven business.
He also highlighted the growing importance of use rights over ownership. “Uber doesn’t own cars, Facebook doesn’t create content, and Alibaba doesn’t hold inventory. The future is about access, not possession.†He imagined a world where people don’t need to carry phones—just access them when needed, seamlessly integrated into their environment.
Kelly also talked about artificial intelligence becoming embedded in everyday objects. “Like electricity, AI will be delivered as a service through the cloud. It will become a commodity, accessible to everyone.†He predicted that AI would drive innovation, allowing humans to focus on creative and non-efficient tasks such as art, science, and invention.
Virtual reality, he argued, would soon become a new form of social media. “As the cost of goods decreases, experiences—especially social ones—will become more valuable.†With mixed reality, interactions could become more immersive, and even cartoon characters could become part of our social lives.
Collaboration and sharing were also central themes. “We live in an era of the sharing economy, but the deeper trend is cooperation. Many of the best products today are built through collaboration,†he said. He cited Wikipedia and Facebook as examples of how collective effort can lead to powerful outcomes.
The final trend he mentioned was that it’s never too late to make a difference. “We are only at the beginning of the beginning. We have the best tools, the largest market, and the lowest barriers to entry. Now is the best time to innovate.â€
In conclusion, Kelly encouraged people to embrace uncertainty and take bold steps. “The next big product may not exist yet, but it’s waiting for us to create it.â€
