Speaking of getting into the headphone pit, it all started with an unintentional Taobao search. Back then, I always thought of headphones as a metaphysical thing—just using the original earphones that came with my phone to listen to music. I didn’t know anything about dynamic drivers or amplifiers until I stumbled upon a bunch of DIY moving-coil earphones on Taobao and read some popular science articles on Baidu. That’s when I got really into the SE535 model, a three-driver moving-coil headphone.
At first, the idea was that there was no way I needed to spend over $2000 for a genuine SE535. But after doing some research and weeding out the bad options, I decided to give it a try. Once I put them on, I realized how much better they were compared to my original earphones (I used the WH-208 with a Lumia 920). The difference was huge. I couldn’t believe how much detail I could hear in songs I had listened to for years. Compared to the DIY ones, the vocals lacked emotion and the background music felt dull. Wearing these new headphones made me realize just how much I had been missing.

But things took a turn for the worse. After wearing them for a while, I accidentally washed them in the washing machine. Although they still worked after drying, the sound quality was nowhere near what it used to be. I couldn’t help but feel regretful.
As a casual buyer, my first priority was always the quality. After comparing many options on Taobao and hearing that similar-priced models had better sound quality, plus the fact that I simply couldn’t afford the Skullcandy Aviator, I went with something more affordable. To be honest, the sound was good, and the design wasn’t bad either. If it looked good, people would forgive the sound. I’ve bought several cheap headphones over the years, but most of them looked good and sounded decent too.

Eventually, I started looking into the QC20. As someone who likes independence, my favorite weekend activity is wearing headphones and listening to music, like Naoko and Watanabe. I remember reading reviews about the QC30, which made me want to try noise-canceling headphones. It felt like the whole world was my music video, and Bose’s noise-canceling headphones were the real deal. However, I didn’t like the design of the QC30 collar. Then I saw ads for the QC35 in the Guangzhou Metro and even saw friends showing off their QC35s, but the application for the headset was limited. Plus, I had an iPhone 6s with a 3.5mm jack, so I ended up going with the QC20, a long-time favorite of mine. But back then, spending over $2000 on a pair of headphones felt a bit overwhelming.
Finally, I waited for the 618 sale, where the price of $1,599 was very tempting. I rushed to buy it on June 1st during the discount period. However, the tragedy struck again—I used a 100-yuan coupon and paid only 1,499. But I had already applied for a 30-day premium insurance, and after waiting more than ten days, I finally got a 100-yuan cashback in July.

The battery box is really hard to carry in your pocket—it has to be wrapped around your phone, and the cable feels messy and uncomfortable. Every time you take your phone out, it's a hassle. You can just hang it out of your pocket, but it looks silly, especially at night, where you become the brightest star in the sky.

This indicator is quite elegant, kind of like the one under the metal on the MacBook Pro. This one is hidden under plastic, and it’s said to be a way to distinguish between genuine and fake products. Pirates just open it directly.

Fortunately, it's also a headset worth more than a thousand dollars, and the craftsmanship is quite impressive. However, the design is still very full—blue and black tones, with the battery box having a similar sound hole as an embellishment. The shark fin earbuds are the most comfortable I've ever used, far surpassing traditional in-ear designs. I originally thought that even with noise cancellation, physical isolation was still needed. But Bose is confident enough to wear them gently and elegantly. And the shark fins keep them firmly in place even during movement. However, when exercising, you have to use the Aware mode to let in ambient sounds. Several times while riding a bike, I almost got hit by a car behind me because the noise cancellation was on (Guangzhou’s roads are really unfriendly to cyclists).

Now comes the metaphysical part:
To be honest, I broke down when the first ear did not activate the noise cancellation. What this thing is, it’s almost like my old Nokia headphones. Before reading other people’s reviews, I couldn’t tell if the noise cancellation was working or not. I thought the problem was the background noise, but now I found out it was really impossible to hear anything without it.
However, once I turned on the noise cancellation, it was much better, though still somewhat disappointing. Compared to my roommate’s Dafa XDA A3, listening to Chen Ruzhen’s song still felt muddy and lacked the clarity of Dafa. But after listening for so many days, I felt there was a difference in the tuning styles. In addition, it was a bit overkill to have a noise-cancelling earphone with a moving-coil setup. However, Bose’s low frequency is very strong, and listening to some electric music was really shocking. Unfortunately, it’s not my taste. I prefer female voices. But relative to all my previous headphones, the QC20 with noise cancellation or aware mode can still kill it.
Let’s talk about noise cancellation. Before, I tried the Dafa noise-canceling headphones at the Sony flagship store in Guangzhou Taikoo Hui, which gave me certain expectations. Bose’s noise cancellation doesn’t do a great job with human voice. I felt like I was listening to an old radio. But if a child is crying on the subway, there’s no difference between it and regular noise cancellation. After all, noise cancellation mainly targets low-frequency sounds. No one on the subway, high-speed rail, or plane is really loud, except for the air conditioner. Once noise cancellation is on, there’s basically no noise. However, there are a few issues:
1. When the high-speed rail goes through a tunnel, the sudden increase in ear pressure is a bit uncomfortable. But that’s unavoidable, after all, without headphones.
2. I don’t know why the sound gets amplified in the headphones when the subway doors open and close.
3. There is basically no way to listen to Line 3 in the Guangzhou Metro. From Dashi to Kecun, the ear pressure is as high as 30 meters. I don’t know why this line is like that. Other lines are very comfortable.
If you want to experience true feelings, I suggest you check out TestV’s QC30 test simulation. It’s really close to reality. Even in physical stores, you can’t experience so many scenarios. What really shocked me was the moment I turned on the noise cancellation.
In summary, this 1,499-dollar purchase is definitely worth it. Whenever I’m in a subway station, restaurant, or mall, the moment I turn on the noise cancellation, it feels like the world has nothing to do with me. It’s just the music video I’m listening to. So when Double 11 comes, don’t hesitate to plant grass and treat your ears well.
