Speaking of the landlord, it all started with an unintentional Taobao search. I had always used my phone's original earphones to listen to music, not knowing anything about dynamic drivers or amps. It wasn't until I stumbled upon a lot of DIY moving-coil headphone builds on Taobao and did some research on Baidu that I got interested in the SE535 model. The idea was that there was no way I needed to spend over $2000 for a genuine SE535.
After successfully planting the grass, I immediately jumped into the pit. This was the stage where headphone prices were just tens or even hundreds—this was the real headphone pit. Compared to my old WH-208 earphones from my Lumia 920, the difference was huge. I never realized how much detail I was missing before. The vocals were emotionless, and the background music felt dull. With the new headphones, I could hear so many things I hadn’t noticed before. It felt like a different world. Shocked! I finally understood the real value of this $400 purchase.
This is the product
But tragedy struck when I accidentally washed them in the washing machine. Even after drying, the sound quality was worse than before. I couldn’t help but look back at them with regret.
As a buyer, the first thing I consider is quality. After comparing a lot on Taobao, and hearing that similar-priced models had better sound, plus the fact that I couldn’t afford a full package like the Skullcandy Aviator, I went with what I could afford. To be honest, the sound was good, and the design was nice enough that people would forgive the price. I’ve bought a few cheap headphones, but most of them looked good and sounded decent too.

QC20 had been on my radar for a long time. I prefer independence, and one of my favorite weekend activities is wearing a headset and exploring the city, like Naoko and Watanabe. I read test reviews about the QC30 and found out that noise-canceling headsets make you feel like the whole world is your music video. Bose’s noise-canceling headphones are amazing, but I didn’t like the design of the QC30 collar. I saw ads for the QC35 in Guangzhou Metro and even saw some friends show off their QC35s, but I felt they weren’t practical enough. Plus, my iPhone 6s still had a 3.5mm port, so I ended up going with the QC20, which I had been using for years.
However, during the early 2K student party, it was a bit overwhelming. Finally, during the 618 sale, the price of 1599 was tempting. I placed the order right away on June 1st. But the tragedy came when I used a 100-yuan coupon to bring it down to 1499. I had also applied for a 30-day premium insurance, and after more than 10 days, I received a 100-yuan cashback in July.

The text is really just the beginning. The picture quality of the claw machine is poor, please forgive me.
The packaging is generally like this, didn't feel more exquisite

Speaking of this battery box, it's really hard to fit in your pocket. You have to wrap it around your phone or the wire feels too long and uncomfortable. Every time you take out your phone, it's a hassle. Just hanging it out of your pocket makes you look like a fool, especially at night when two lights shine and you're the brightest star in the sky.

This indicator is quite elegant, kind of like the hidden light under the MacBook Pro metal, this one is hidden under the plastic. It's said that this is a way to distinguish genuine from fake ones. Pirates just open it directly.

Still a gap
Fortunately, it's a headset worth over a thousand dollars, and the craftsmanship is still impressive. However, the design is still very full, with a blue and black color scheme. The battery box has a similar sound hole as an embellishment. The shark fin earbuds are the most comfortable I've ever used, and I don't even think about traditional in-ear headphones. I originally thought that noise-canceling headphones would need physical isolation, but Bose is so confident that just gently wearing them feels elegant. The shark fins keep them firmly in place even when moving. However, when exercising, you must use the aware mode to let in ambient sounds. Several times while riding a bike, the noise cancellation almost made me miss a car behind me (Guangzhou's roads are really unfriendly to cyclists).

Here comes the metaphysics:
To be honest, I was shocked when the first ear didn’t activate noise cancellation. What this thing is, it’s almost like my Nokia headphones. Before reading others’ reviews, I couldn’t tell if the noise cancellation was working or not. I thought it was a problem with the low-end noise, but now I realize it’s really impossible to hear without it.
However, once the noise cancellation was turned on, it improved significantly, though still somewhat disappointing. Compared to my roommate’s Dafa XDA A3, listening to Chen Ruzhen’s song still felt muddy and lacked the clarity of Dafa. But after listening for several days, I felt there was a difference in tuning styles. In addition, having a noise-reducing earphone with a moving coil setup was a bit overkill. However, Bose’s bass is very strong, and listening to electric tracks was quite shocking. Unfortunately, it's not my taste. I prefer female voices. But compared to all my other headphones, the QC20 with noise cancellation or aware mode can still kill it.
Let’s talk about noise cancellation. Before visiting the Sony China flagship store in Guangzhou TaiKoo Hui, I had certain expectations. Bose’s noise cancellation isn’t very effective against human voices. It feels like listening to an old radio. If a child is crying on the subway, there's no difference between that and noise cancellation. After all, noise cancellation mainly targets low-frequency sounds. On subways, high-speed trains, or planes, it’s usually very comfortable, or it's a loud air conditioner. Once noise cancellation is on, there's basically no noise. However, there are several issues:
1. When the high-speed rail enters a tunnel, the sudden increase in ear pressure is a bit uncomfortable. But that’s unavoidable, after all, without headphones.
2. I don’t know why the sound gets amplified in the headphones when the subway doors open and close.
3. There is basically no way to listen to Line 3 in Guangzhou Metro. From Dashi to Kecun, the ear pressure is as large as 30 meters. This line doesn’t know why. Other lines are very comfortable.
If you want to experience the real feeling, I suggest you check out TestV’s QC30 test simulation. It’s really close to reality. Even in physical stores, you can't experience so many scenarios. What really shocked me was the moment I turned on the noise cancellation.
In summary, this 1499-dollar purchase is definitely worth it. Whenever I’m in a subway station, restaurant, or mall, the moment I turn on the noise cancellation, the world has nothing to do with me. It's just the MV of the song I'm listening to. When Double 11 comes, don’t hesitate to plant the grass and treat your ears well.
