Thousands of lumens only know how to count the brightness

    When purchasing a projector, brightness is always one of the most important factors to consider. The higher the brightness, the clearer and more vivid the image will appear under similar ambient lighting conditions. Many smart projectors today exceed 1000 ANSI lumens, which is impressive—especially when compared to traditional lamp-based projectors. For mini projectors, this level of brightness is now considered top-tier.

    Understanding Projector Brightness
    ANSI Lumens: This is a standard unit used to measure the brightness of projectors. It refers to the total amount of light emitted by the projector. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) established a specific method for measuring this. The process involves placing the projector 2.4 meters from a 60-inch screen, measuring the light intensity at nine points arranged in a "T" shape using a lux meter, and then calculating the average illumination. Finally, multiplying that average by the screen area gives the ANSI lumen value.

    ISO Lumens: ISO is the International Organization for Standardization, which also sets standards for brightness measurement. While ANSI was traditionally used in many projectors, especially from European and American manufacturers, ISO standards are becoming more common, particularly among Japanese brands and newer models.
    Challenges in Micro-Projector Brightness
    Traditional projectors are usually large due to their high-voltage lamps, which produce high brightness but also consume a lot of power and generate significant heat. They require ample space for cooling and are often mounted on ceilings. In contrast, micro-projectors typically use LED light sources, which are energy-efficient but have lower brightness compared to traditional lamps. The dispersed nature of LEDs also affects light concentration, making it harder to achieve both high brightness and compact size.
    As micro-projector brightness has increased from dozens to thousands of lumens, their sizes have also grown accordingly. This trade-off between brightness and form factor remains a key challenge in the industry.

    Another limiting factor is the microchip used in the projection system. Most micro-projectors use DMD chips from Texas Instruments, with sizes ranging from 0.2 inches to 0.47 inches. These chip sizes not only affect resolution but also impact brightness. The 0.45-inch chip is currently the mainstream choice for high-end micro-projectors, offering a resolution of 1280×800. Many projectors priced around 3,000 yuan with over 1,000 ANSI lumens use this chip. The 0.47-inch version can support 1080p resolution, making it ideal for high-definition content.
    Ultra-High Brightness Performance
    The newly released F1 mini projector from Micro Whale uses a 0.45-inch DMD chip and delivers 1200 ANSI lumens. During daylight hours (without direct sunlight), the brightness is more than sufficient, and no additional shading is needed.

    While current micro-projectors offer excellent brightness for daytime use, achieving the best viewing experience still requires some basic shading. In bright environments, the difference between 200 and 1000 ANSI lumens isn't very noticeable. However, in low-light settings, the advantages of higher brightness become much more apparent.
