Cloudy, the next mainstream technology for cloud computing

Human beings possess incredible power. Not only can they create things that don’t exist in nature, but they can also enhance and evolve what already exists. Today, as cloud computing becomes ubiquitous, a new concept is set to bring another wave of transformation. In the process of continuous innovation, people are constantly pushing for more advanced technologies. The next big thing in cloud computing might not be "cloudy" — at least not in the way we’ve come to understand it. We live in a world that loves naming things. When it comes to cloud computing, these names often revolve around usage models: public, private, and hybrid. Now, a new term has emerged — multicloud — to describe an evolving cloud computing model that reflects how businesses are managing their digital infrastructure. ![Cloudy, the next mainstream technology for cloud computing](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/16/45/04/63E-0.jpg) **Understanding Cloudy: Terms and Definitions** “Cloudy” refers to the use of more than one public cloud. This approach becomes common when companies want to avoid being dependent on a single provider, instead selecting the best services from each public cloud to optimize performance and cost. **Cloudy vs. Hybrid Cloud** Some people use “cloudy” and “hybrid cloud” interchangeably, but there’s a clear distinction. A hybrid cloud typically combines private clouds (such as on-premises data centers) with public clouds. On the other hand, a cloudy environment involves using multiple public clouds together. If you combine multiple public and private clouds, it’s still considered a cloudy setup — sometimes referred to as a hybrid-cloud model. **What is a Practical Hybrid Cloud?** There's also a term called the “Practical Hybrid Cloud,” which blends traditional enterprise data centers with public clouds. This model exists because many companies have grown dissatisfied with private clouds and now seek to integrate their existing infrastructure with public cloud services. In contrast, a cloudy architecture specifically uses two or more public clouds, without involving private ones. **Why is Cloudy Becoming a Trend?** As a trend, cloud computing is becoming increasingly complex. A few years ago, the vision was to run workloads on a single cloud — either public or private. But as more options became available, hybrid cloud architectures gained traction by offering greater flexibility and choice. Enterprise IT departments now value this flexibility, especially with major players like Google and Microsoft offering compelling public cloud platforms that provide real alternatives to Amazon Web Services. Other providers, such as IBM, HP Enterprise, and more recently Oracle, have entered the market, though with less success so far. With so many viable public cloud options, companies are starting to adopt formal architectural strategies, and even shadow IT teams — groups within enterprises that use cloud services independently — are combining different public clouds. These teams often choose different providers and hope that enterprise IT can manage them later. Regardless of how it happens, most companies today operate in a cloudy environment. While many IT departments still rely solely on the native tools provided by each cloud vendor, some organizations are taking a smarter approach by abstracting complexity. By using tools like Cloud Management Platforms (CMPs) and Cloud Service Brokers (CSBs), they can manage multiple clouds as if they were a single system. However, this approach usually means sacrificing some unique features of each cloud, effectively adopting a “least common denominator” strategy.
