On December 1st, the 5th China Internet Audiovisual Conference’s Theme Forum—Internet TV Industry Summit was held in Chengdu. This event brought together industry leaders to discuss the latest trends and strategies shaping the future of internet television. Focused on the theme of “New TV Value,†the forum aimed to foster dialogue, innovation, and collaboration among key players in the field.
During the session, Shizuo Shi, Vice President of Oriental Pearl and President of BesTV, presented two key areas: the current state of the industry and its future direction. His insights offered a comprehensive view of where the sector stands today and where it might be heading.
The current state of internet TV is marked by significant changes. One major trend is the growing scale of OTT (Over-The-Top) services. By mid-2017, the number of smart TVs had reached 240 million units, with 160 million smart TV terminals and 72.06 million OTT boxes. The activation rate of these devices exceeded 50%, signaling a strong user base. In comparison, traditional cable TV and IPTV are still relevant, but the market is shifting rapidly.
Another important change is in viewing habits. Smart TVs have shown high user engagement, with monthly boot rates reaching 77%, nearly matching those of IPTV. Daily and weekly usage also remains robust, showing that users are increasingly turning to smart TVs for their entertainment needs.
In terms of business models, the industry is undergoing a transformation. Traditional TV relied on advertising, while IPTV focused on subscriptions. Now, internet TV thrives on traffic and user engagement. This shift has led to more competition and a move toward platform-based services, with content driving the demand rather than fixed channels.
Looking ahead, the future of internet TV is about convergence, openness, and shared growth. Shizuo emphasized three key concepts: assembling, opening, and sharing. Assembling refers to the need for collaboration between different stakeholders, including internet companies, smart device manufacturers, and content providers. Openness is crucial, as it fosters innovation and better partnerships. Sharing ensures that value is distributed fairly across all parties involved.
BesTV has been actively pursuing open collaborations, working with companies like Xiaomi, Lenovo, and Sharp. These partnerships have led to new business models and improved user experiences. Additionally, BesTV is exploring cross-industry integrations, such as education, healthcare, and tourism, where internet technology can bring added value.
In conclusion, Shizuo expressed optimism about the future of the industry. He believes that while individual efforts are important, collective progress will lead to greater success. Together, the industry can create a brighter, more innovative future for internet television.
