Mobile App was questioned by India as spyware, Xiaomi and UC responded

On December 3, Xiaomi and UC addressed the Indian Interior Ministry’s directive prohibiting military personnel from installing a range of Chinese mobile applications. In response, Xiaomi stated that it has conducted internal investigations into the matter, while UC emphasized its commitment to maintaining user trust and transparency. A spokesperson for Xiaomi said: “At Xiaomi, we prioritize security and privacy above all else. Our global e-commerce platform and data from international users are stored in secure Amazon AWS data centers located in California and Singapore. We are currently reviewing the report and hope that users can rest assured that we are dedicated to protecting their data at all times.” UC also issued a statement, expressing concern over the media reports that accused them of being spyware. They said: “We feel wronged by the recent claims about our apps being used by the Indian military. At UC, we take security and privacy very seriously and are committed to following local regulations wherever we operate, including India. We are proud to serve millions of Indian users and have long-term plans for the region. UC Browser and UC News are not spyware or malware as falsely reported.” Earlier this week, Indian media outlets reported that intelligence agencies had advised security forces to avoid using mobile apps developed by Chinese companies or linked to China, citing concerns over potential surveillance risks. The list of banned applications reportedly includes Truecaller, UC Browser, WeChat, and several pre-installed apps on Xiaomi devices such as the Xiaomi Community, Xiaomi Store, and Xiaomi Video Call — all suspected of being spyware. This development highlights growing tensions between India and Chinese tech companies amid increasing scrutiny over data privacy and national security. Both Xiaomi and UC have taken steps to reassure users and emphasize their compliance with global and local regulations. As the situation unfolds, further clarity is expected from both companies and the Indian government.
