    With the continuous advancement in LED chip technology and power supply systems, issues such as heat dissipation, light degradation, and power stability in LED street lights have been significantly improved. Moreover, the ongoing reduction in costs has dramatically enhanced the cost-effectiveness of these lighting solutions. As a result, LED street lamps are now widely adopted for new installations. Domestically, LED street lights have gradually replaced traditional ones, becoming the dominant choice for urban illumination. The integration of intelligent control features has further strengthened their advantages, especially in the context of global energy conservation and emission reduction efforts. This has led to a steady increase in the market penetration of LED street lights. According to data from GGII, the domestic LED market reached 9.46 billion yuan in 2016, marking a year-on-year growth of 15.4%. However, with the gradual reduction of government subsidies and the completion of street lamp upgrades in coastal regions, the transformation to LED lighting is entering a more stable and sustainable phase. In this context, the overseas market is expected to become the key driver for future growth. Recently, India’s Patna Chief Deputy Minister Sushil Kumar Modi announced that as part of the National Street Light Program (SLNP), LED street lights will be installed across all municipal companies and urban institutions in the state to save energy. The government has also emphasized replacing traditional bulbs with LEDs, which could save up to 9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity nationwide. Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL), a public sector joint venture, will begin installing new LED street lights in Bihar. According to local surveys, this project is expected to save municipal institutions about 131 million rupees annually—roughly 134 million yuan. In addition, Chicago recently launched the largest smart streetlight program in the U.S., aiming to replace 250,000 traditional street lights with smart LED fixtures. Ameresco, a renewable energy company, will collaborate with Iron Spring Networks, an IoT solution provider, over four years to convert around 85% of existing streetlights into smart LED units. The new system is projected to reduce energy consumption by 50–75%. Silver Spring’s IPv6 platform enables remote control of street lights based on real-time needs, facilitates remote monitoring, and speeds up maintenance when failures occur. Mike Bell, executive from Silver Spring, called the Chicago initiative one of the largest modernization projects in the U.S., highlighting its potential to shape the future of smart cities. Driven by globalization and supportive policies, Chinese LED companies are increasingly expanding internationally. Large-scale LED street light replacements in India and Chicago represent significant opportunities for Chinese manufacturers. Looking ahead, smart lighting is set to define the future of LED street lights. With the rapid development of smart cities and the widespread adoption of technologies like the Internet of Things and cloud computing, intelligent street lighting is poised for substantial growth. GGII predicts that by 2020, the market penetration rate of smart LED street lights in China will reach approximately 40%. Yang Yanhui, marketing director at Zhongke Core Sources, noted that while LED lighting has become standard in most cities worldwide, intelligent control is now gaining traction. Smart lighting not only improves energy efficiency but also integrates various city infrastructure elements, such as manhole covers, trash bins, surveillance, and billboards, through a unified IoT platform. Philips Lighting has been at the forefront of this trend. Since 2014, it has introduced the CityTouch smart connected road lighting system, successfully deployed in cities like Los Angeles and Jakarta. In 2017, Philips launched the CityTouch Flex version in China, enabling access to a range of smart city applications—from emergency systems to traffic management and weather monitoring. Xiang Diming, general manager of Philips Lighting Greater China, expressed confidence in the future of smart cities, stating that the launch of CityTouch Flex would help drive urban innovation. Beyond street lighting, Philips aims to leverage its intelligent lighting solutions in offices, industries, hotels, and commercial buildings to enhance urban living experiences. In conclusion, as smart connected lighting becomes more prevalent, street lights are evolving beyond mere illumination. They are becoming integral components of smart city ecosystems, contributing to energy savings, crime reduction, improved traffic safety, and even economic growth.
