Don't let yourself be limited by dogma—living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't allow the noise of others' opinions to drown out your own inner voice. Most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

(Your time is limited, so don’t live for others. Don’t be confined by old ideas, don’t let the thoughts of others limit you. Don’t let other people’s views influence your inner voice. The most important thing is to bravely follow your own soul and intuition. Only your own mind and intuition understand your true desires. Everything else is just secondary.)

    - Steve Paul Jobs

At 1 am on September 13th, Beijing time, Apple held its annual "Technology Spring Festival Evening"—the "Apple 2017 Autumn New Product Launch Conference" at the Jobs Theater in Apple Park. The event introduced the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the special 10th-anniversary edition, the iPhone X. This was the first time Apple had unveiled three new iPhones simultaneously at a press conference.

Named after Steve Jobs, the venue carried a strong sense of nostalgia and mystery, especially with the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. The new "one more thing" was the iPhone X, which brought a range of groundbreaking technologies. Let’s take a closer look at what made it so special.

A11 Bionic Processor + Neural Engine

The A11 Bionic chip in the iPhone X represents a major upgrade from its predecessor. It still uses the industry-leading 10nm process technology. The A11 has a total of six cores—two high-performance Monsoon cores for intensive tasks and four energy-efficient Mistral cores for lighter operations. Compared to the A10X, the energy efficiency core is 70% better, and the performance core offers a 25% improvement.

Beyond the bionic term, the A11 also features a powerful neural engine capable of up to 600 billion operations per second. It supports fast face ID analysis and will play a key role in AI and deep learning applications in the future.

    Wireless Charging + Fast Charging

iPhone X supports wireless charging but not long-range wireless charging. It also adopted fast charging, allowing users to charge 50% in just 30 minutes.

Instead of developing its own wireless charging tech, Apple joined the WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) and used the Qi standard. The new AirPower charger can charge an iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X, along with an Apple Watch and AirPods—all at once.

This makes it easier for users to charge multiple devices in one go. The iPhone X also lasts two hours longer than the iPhone 7.

Face ID – Unlock with Your Face

iPhone X eliminated Touch ID and replaced it with Face ID. Instead of fingerprint scanning, it uses advanced facial recognition. Using the TrueDepth camera system and the A11 chip, it projects over 30,000 invisible light points onto your face to create a depth map.

This data is then compared using infrared scanning. Face ID is faster and more accurate than Touch ID, with a random unlock success rate of 1 in a million. It even works with glasses, different hairstyles, and beards. Plus, it detects if you're looking at the screen before unlocking.

    Edge-to-Edge Display

iPhone X features a full-screen design with minimal bezels. The only non-screen area is the sensor above the display. This is the first time Apple used an OLED screen, called “Super Retina Display.” It boasts a 5.8-inch screen with HDR support, 2436 x 1125 resolution, 458 ppi, and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

The screen is seamlessly integrated into the body, along with curved glass on both sides and a stainless steel frame, making it one of the most visually striking designs in iPhone history.

Double Glass + Stainless Steel Frame

iPhone X features a double-sided glass design with a surgical-grade stainless steel frame. This gives it enhanced durability, water and dust resistance, and supports wireless charging.

    Advanced Camera System

The iPhone X brings a major upgrade to the camera. It features a vertical dual-lens rear camera with f/1.8 and f/2.4 apertures, improved low-light performance, and four LED True Tone flashes. The front-facing camera includes a deep-sensing system that powers Face ID and portrait mode selfies.

The new sensor, color filter, and telephoto lens offer better image quality and optical stabilization. The front camera also supports advanced features like Animoji and real-time expression tracking.

    New Interaction Design

With no physical Home button, the iPhone X uses gestures for navigation. Swiping up from the bottom activates the Home screen, while pressing and swiping opens multitasking. This gesture-based interface has been around since iOS 5, but it now fits perfectly with the new design of the iPhone X.

    Animoji – Animated Expressions

iPhone X’s TrueDepth camera captures facial expressions in real time, allowing users to create animated emojis and send them via iMessage. While this feature is exclusive to iPhone X, it adds a fun and personal touch to communication.

    Summary of “Black Technologies”

iPhone X is packed with innovations that go beyond what many expected. After a period of slow progress, Apple pushed the boundaries with a completely new design and groundbreaking features. As the industry leader, Apple’s advancements are likely to shape the next generation of smartphones.
