Beijing Morning Post's live report, by reporter Kang Jia, revealed that a large number of shared bicycles have been piling up in a wasteland near the upper part of Haidian District. A reporter from the newspaper found that at least 5,000 bikes from different brands were stacked together in the area. According to the report, these bikes had been stored there for about a month. A local official from the Shangdi Sub-district Office mentioned that some shared bikes were occupying bicycle lanes and motor vehicle lanes, which posed safety risks. However, bikes placed properly can still be used normally.
According to netizens, an open-air parking lot was discovered near the Lenovo Building in Haidian District, where many shared bikes were parked, but all were locked and not usable. At noon yesterday, the reporter visited the area. The open space across from the building was enclosed with a blue fence, and the gate was locked. There was no staff present. Through the gaps, it was visible that various colored shared bikes, including some electric ones, were neatly arranged inside. Some of the seats were covered in ash, suggesting they had been left there for a long time.
The reporter spoke with a staff member from a nearby bus station. They said that about a month ago, they saw urban management officers slowly starting to stack bikes in the area, and the number kept increasing without anyone removing them. On the roadside, several Mobike and ofo employees were seen picking up bikes from the streets and moving them away from motorways and sidewalks. "We come here regularly, otherwise the bikes would just pile up on the road. If we don’t, the city management will take them away," one of them said.
Later, the reporter contacted the Shangdi Sub-district Office. A person named Sun from the office stated that since August, the sub-district has been reclaiming improperly parked shared bikes. In less than a month, over 5,000 bikes were collected within the Shangdi district. "We had meetings with 12 representatives from the bike-sharing companies in this area, urging them to strengthen their corporate responsibility and improve management." However, Sun admitted that issues still persist, especially in crowded areas like bus stops and subway stations. Bikes are often left in motor vehicle lanes and blind spots, causing traffic problems. "If we find bikes on motorways, in green spaces, or on blind roads, we take them back and inform the company to collect them. Now, with more piles appearing, we are also facing challenges."
Electric bikes without license plates were temporarily detained due to legal issues. When the reporter reached out to the land owner, the person said that the issue of reclaimed bikes was being handled by another department. A representative from the bike-sharing company mentioned that to improve their management, they would also contact the sub-district office and re-enter the market with the recovered bikes.
A spokesperson from the Haidian District Municipal Transportation Committee noted that the current management and usage of shared bikes are still under exploration. However, they hope that besides government efforts, companies should also take on social and management responsibilities.
