With the continuous advancement in LED chip technology and power supply systems, issues such as heat dissipation, light degradation, and power stability in LED street lights have been significantly improved. At the same time, the steady decline in costs has greatly enhanced the cost-effectiveness of LED street lighting solutions. This has made them a preferred choice for urban illumination. In China, LED street lights are now the main option for newly installed streetlights, gradually replacing traditional lighting systems. The integration of intelligent control features further enhances the advantages of LED technology, making it more efficient and adaptable. As global efforts to reduce energy consumption and emissions continue, the adoption rate of LED street lamps has steadily increased. According to data from GGII, the domestic LED market reached 9.46 billion yuan in 2016, marking a year-on-year growth of 15.4%. However, with government subsidies decreasing and infrastructure development in coastal regions nearing completion, the transformation to LED street lights is entering a phase of stable and sustainable growth. Meanwhile, the overseas market is expected to become the key driver of future expansion. India’s Patna Chief Deputy Minister, Sushil Kumar Modi, recently announced that as part of the National Street Light Program (SLNP), LED street lights will be installed across all municipal companies and urban institutions in the state. This initiative aims to save a significant amount of electricity—up to 9 billion kilowatt-hours nationwide. Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL) will lead the installation, and according to a survey, this move could save around Rs 131 million annually for municipal institutions. Meanwhile, in the United States, Chicago has launched one of the largest smart streetlight programs, aiming to replace 250,000 traditional street lights with smart LED systems. Ameresco, in collaboration with Iron Spring Networks, is working on a four-year modernization project to convert about 85% of existing streetlights into smart LED units. These new lights are projected to cut energy use by 50 to 75% compared to older models. Silver Spring's IPv6 platform allows remote control of street lights based on real-time needs and enables proactive maintenance. Mike Bell, an executive at Silver Spring, called the Chicago project one of the most significant modernization efforts in the U.S., highlighting its potential to shape the future of smart cities. Driven by globalization and supportive policies, Chinese LED companies are increasingly expanding their presence abroad. Major projects like the large-scale LED streetlight replacement in India and Chicago present significant opportunities for these firms. Looking ahead, smart lighting is set to play a central role in the future of LED street lights. With the rapid development of smart cities and the widespread application of technologies like IoT and cloud computing, intelligent street lighting is expected to see substantial growth. GGII forecasts that by 2020, the penetration rate of smart LED street lights in China could reach around 40%. Yang Yanhui, marketing director at Zhongke Core Sources, noted that intelligent control is becoming more common alongside LED lighting. Smart systems can optimize energy use, integrate city resources, and support various smart city applications. This not only improves efficiency but also contributes to safer, more sustainable urban environments. Philips Lighting has already introduced its CityTouch smart connected road lighting system in several major cities, including Los Angeles and Jakarta. In 2017, they launched the CityTouch Flex version in China, which serves as an IoT access point for a range of smart city applications—from emergency systems to traffic management and environmental monitoring. Xiang Diming, general manager of Philips Lighting Greater China, emphasized that the company is committed to driving smart city development through intelligent lighting solutions. Beyond street lighting, they aim to bring smart lighting benefits to offices, industries, hotels, and commercial spaces, enhancing urban living experiences. In summary, as smart connected lighting becomes more widespread, street lights are evolving beyond basic illumination. They are now integral to creating smart city ecosystems, improving urban operations, reducing crime, ensuring traffic safety, and even boosting economic development.
