At the 2016 Paris Motor Show, Opel unveiled its latest Zafira model, which although not a completely new generation, brought some unexpected changes in its appearance. Gone was the distinctive "eight-character" design, replaced instead by a horizontally extended Opel twin-wing motif. For those familiar with both Opel and Buick models, it’s no secret that many of their shared platform vehicles have undergone rebranding. In China, the long-rumored Buick GL6 compact MPV is set to debut as a rebranded version of the new Zafira. So, how does this model stack up?
The exterior of the new Zafira has seen minor updates, with a smoother, more rounded overall aesthetic. The front headlights now feature a dual-wing design, becoming the most iconic aspect of the vehicle. The new family face is evident in the front grille seamlessly integrating with the headlight design, creating a sleeker and more stable appearance. Equipped with LED adaptive headlights, the new car also boasts distinctive daytime running lights with a double-folded line pattern, making it highly noticeable. The front fog lights are cleverly integrated into the grille, maintaining a compact and refined look.
Despite the slight redesign, the side profile of the new Zafira remains largely unchanged, retaining its characteristic upward-sweeping side skirt line. The body features a hidden B-pillar and C-pillar design, with a straight roofline that ensures ample headroom for the rear two rows of seating. The rear end retains the basic shape of the previous model, maintaining its clean and straightforward styling. The taillights remain similar to the older design, with a prominent light strip and a flat overall form.
Inside, the new Zafira sees significant interior upgrades. A 7-inch touchscreen takes center stage on the dashboard, along with a redesigned central control panel that adds a modern touch. The new three-spoke steering wheel injects a sportier feel into the cabin. The IntelliLink system includes a 7-inch touchscreen, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, offering full smartphone integration. Comfort features include a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, and heated front seats. Technologically, the Zafira offers adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and an "Opel Eye" camera system with lane departure warning and adjustable suspension.
The second-row seats can be configured as either three individual seats or a pair of captain's chairs. When in the latter configuration, the central seat transforms into a convenient armrest. The outer seats can slide 280mm rearward and inward by 50mm, providing enhanced flexibility for passengers.
Under the hood, the new Zafira comes with a choice of a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine or a 1.6-liter turbo-diesel engine. The transmission options include a six-speed manual and an automatic gearbox.
Overall, the new Zafira continues to offer practicality and innovation, positioning itself as a strong competitor in the compact MPV segment. With its updated design and advanced tech, it aims to appeal to families looking for a versatile and comfortable vehicle.
