On Wednesday, India's Minister of Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy, Piyush Goyal, announced that by 2019, India might become the world's first nation to fully adopt LED products for all its lighting requirements. Speaking at a ceremony where India Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL) signed a memorandum with three state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs), Goyal remarked, "India is poised to become the first country globally to rely entirely on LED lighting by 2019."
He emphasized that this initiative would serve as a powerful message to the international community, showcasing India's dedication to fulfilling its commitments and addressing global concerns regarding climate change. Goyal highlighted that the collaboration between EESL and the OMCs would play a pivotal role in driving India toward complete dependence on LED lighting.
Under this partnership, consumers can purchase high-quality 9W LED bulbs for Rs 70 (approximately $1 USD), 20W LED tubes for Rs 220 (around $3 USD), and energy-efficient ceiling fans rated at five stars for approximately Rs 1,250 (around $18 USD).
To date, through the "Ujala" program, over 255 million LED bulbs, more than 306,000 LED tubes, and around 1.15 million energy-saving fans have been distributed across the country. The Indian Ministry of Power estimates that the initiative will result in annual savings of 334 billion kWh of electricity, translating into a reduction of consumer costs by Rs 133.46 billion (nearly $2 billion USD).
The success of the Ujala project not only underscores India’s progress in sustainable energy practices but also demonstrates how innovative partnerships can drive significant environmental benefits while reducing costs for households. This move reflects India's commitment to fostering green growth and contributing positively to global efforts aimed at combating climate change.
